It’s rare for a third movie in a series to become a huge streaming hit, especially one that could rival its earlier installments. Even more unusual is achieving such high praise – a 92% rating on both the Tomatometer and Popcorn Score on Rotten Tomatoes, earning it ‘Certified Fresh’ and ‘Verified Hot’ status. But that’s exactly what’s happened with the latest Netflix original, quickly making it one of the platform’s most popular titles.
Rian Johnson’s popular mystery series, Knives Out, returns with Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. The new film features another impressive cast and a wildly entertaining story. This time, detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) investigates a strange murder at a small church in upstate New York – a murder disguised as a miracle. He teams up with local police chief Geraldine Scott (Mila Kunis) to determine if a young priest (Josh O’Connor) is responsible. The film also stars Josh Borlin, Glenn Close, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, and many other well-known actors. Director Rian Johnson described working with the cast as amazing, saying he was constantly surprised they agreed to be part of the project. He believes the chemistry between the actors is what makes these films so enjoyable.
Wake Up Dead Man Is A Killer Good Time
The film has been widely praised by both viewers and critics. Alan French from Sunshine State Cineplex calls it Johnson’s most thoughtful look at what people will do for each other, describing it as a quieter, but ultimately more satisfying entry in the Knives Out series. Justin Chang of the New Yorker echoes this sentiment, noting Johnson’s strength lies in taking even unconventional subjects – like mysteries and faith – seriously.
Director Rian Johnson described the new film as a return to the classic roots of mystery stories, even those predating Agatha Christie – like the tales of Edgar Allan Poe. While still a humorous and entertaining Benoit Blanc mystery, this installment features a darker, more gothic atmosphere, taking place in an old stone church and surrounded by graveyards. He characterized the film as both realistic and atmospheric.
