In 2024, Nintendo caught many off guard when they revealed their purchase of a new studio. Acquisitions have always been a part of Nintendo’s strategic approach, with them seeking out studios that can address specific gaps in their game portfolio. Unlike previous acquisitions which focused on developing exclusive games, Nintendo bought Shiver Entertainment with the aim to “create and adapt software for various platforms, such as the Nintendo Switch.” Shiver had already ported popular titles like “Hogwarts Legacy” and “Mortal Kombat 1” to the Switch, and Nintendo appears to have been taken by the quality of their work.
It appears that Shiver Studios has resumed its traditional role in the era of Nintendo Switch 2, as indicated by a LinkedIn post (noted by Nintendo Everything). The studio was involved in developing the Nintendo Switch 2 version of WWE 2K25, and since its release last month, the game’s performance has garnered much positive feedback from players. Although some players have expressed disappointment over the absence of the Community Creations feature, the port seems to be running smoothly. This is a promising sign for future Nintendo Switch 2 adaptations.
This move by Nintendo to acquire a studio specializing in collaborating with external publishers on porting their games is indicative of the significant shift in the company’s approach. In the past, Nintendo appeared to pay less attention to the significance of third-party games on its platforms, which led to some past systems missing out. This oversight benefited competitors like PlayStation and Xbox. However, with the introduction of the Switch, there was a marked change, as the system experienced the strongest third-party support since the Super Nintendo era. Major studios and indie teams flooded the platform with numerous games.
It’s unclear what Shiver might work on next, but there are numerous third-party games that were never released on the Switch and could potentially be brought to the Switch 2. If Nintendo could encourage Shiver to prioritize porting these games, it could significantly enhance the Switch 2 experience. The Switch has been a big success for Nintendo since its launch, but its long-term prosperity relies heavily on a continuous supply of games, not just exclusives, but also popular titles from other publishers that are already available elsewhere.
Excitedly, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll uncover more about Nintendo’s upcoming strategies soon, as whispers of a Nintendo Direct presentation in September have been circulating. Nintendo wrapped up July with an exclusive Partner Showcase featuring third-party games. Following this, they hosted an Indie World showcase in August. Yet, there’s been no hint of a regular Nintendo Direct so far. Historically, Nintendo has often scheduled their Nintendo Direct presentations for September, lending some credibility to these rumors. For now, we just need to stay hopeful and patient to see what they have in store for us.
