A brand new game coming to the Nintendo Switch is generating buzz among longtime Pokémon fans. While more and more games are appearing on multiple consoles – like Halo now on PlayStation – Nintendo still holds exclusive rights to certain franchises, most notably Pokémon. This new game, though not officially a Pokémon title, feels very much like a throwback to the classic games of the ’90s, and that’s exactly what fans are thrilled about. It successfully captures the spirit of those older titles, offering a nostalgic experience that players have been wanting.
Okay, so I just saw on Nintendo Everything that Doki Monsters: Quest is heading to the Switch, and it looks awesome! If you’re like me and a huge Pokémon fan, you need to check this game out. Seriously, I read they basically had to design it to avoid legal trouble if they released it anywhere but the Switch! It totally gives me Pokémon vibes – the look, the feel – but it’s got its own story, a big world to explore, and tons of different creatures to collect. It’s not a straight-up copy, but it’s definitely inspired by Pokémon, and honestly, it feels like discovering a lost ’90s Pokémon game, but for a modern console. I’m super excited!
Doki Monsters: Quest is a new adventure creature-catching game similar to Pokémon

While Pocket Monsters Red and Green weren’t the first games to let players capture creatures – that idea started with Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei in 1987 – the Pokémon franchise truly popularized the concept and has inspired countless games since. With over 100 games and a hit anime series, Pokémon has become a cultural phenomenon. However, it’s been a while since a game with the same charm as the original ‘90s titles has appeared.
Recent Pokémon games, such as Pokémon Legends: Z-A, have stunning graphics that blend the classic Pokémon look with modern design. Doki Monsters: Quest takes a different approach, going back to the pixelated style that many older fans love. While it’s not a Pokémon game and isn’t connected to that series, the announcement trailer shows it delivers everything players expect from a great creature-collecting game. You’ll explore a large world, catch various creatures, battle opponents, and unlock new possibilities along the way.
RedDeerGames calls Doki Monsters: Quest a nostalgic tribute to classic handheld RPGs, blending retro charm with modern gameplay. Players can collect 140 different monsters and journey through over 15 towns, with even more challenges available after completing the main story. It’s clear the developers are passionate about old-school RPGs, especially Pokémon, and fans of those games will definitely want to keep an eye on this title. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet, the developers say it’s coming “soon.”
