Fans continue to love One Piece and its quirky adventures with Luffy and the Straw Hat crew, which now extend to anime, a live-action series, video games, and other media. A new One Piece video game recently launched on Kickstarter and quickly exceeded its funding goal. After getting a chance to play it ourselves, we’re sharing our thoughts on why you should be excited and giving you our full impressions.
The latest One Piece game, One Piece: Dawn of Liberation, is coming from KessCo. It’s a cooperative game for 1-4 players where you build a crew and team up to protect the people of Waco and defeat Kaido, the powerful Emperor of the Sea. The game has already exceeded its $10,000 funding goal, reaching almost $160,000, and with 29 days left in the campaign, it’s likely they’ll add stretch goals soon.
Why Franchise Fans Will Love One Piece: Dawn of Liberation

When you first unpack this game, what really strikes you is how deeply it’s connected to the One Piece world, especially the Wano Arc. The artwork on the boards and cards is all new, showcasing Wano and Onigashima beautifully. It doesn’t just show these places, though – it really dives into their history and important locations, brought to life through characters like the Red Scabbards and a fantastic, see-through purple dice tower designed like Onigashima itself.
I’m seriously impressed with how many characters you get to play right from the start – a whopping 17! And that’s not all, there are 4 hidden characters to unlock too! It’s a dream team, honestly, with all your favorites like Luffy, Zoro, Nami, and so many other heroes and allies. The villains are just as epic – you’ll battle massive bosses like Big Mom, Snake Orochi, and Jack as you work your way up to facing Kaido. It’s an incredible lineup!
Dawn of Liberation Blends Fan Service With Core Gameplay, and It Rules

The game’s anime inspiration goes beyond just appearances, and that’s where it truly excels. Dawn of Liberation is packed with fun references to the source material, but cleverly integrates them into the cooperative gameplay. This is immediately apparent when building your team. After selecting your characters, you’ll designate a Captain and a first crew member, each with unique abilities that can be used based on their assigned role.
When playing, each character has different stats depending on their role. If they’re your Captain, you use one set of stats displayed on their card. If they’re part of your crew supporting the Captain, you use a different set to enhance the Captain’s abilities. Each character also has a unique, always-active ability that lets you do many things during your turn, like gather more resources, defeat enemy pirates, or place samurai on the game board – all crucial for success.
You can expand your team by finishing missions and through other gameplay features. Adding new characters gives you more choices during your turns. To complete these missions, you’ll need to collect specific resources and lore, and then assign those resources to the Tobi Roppo board, which represents the six members of the Beast Pirates.
It’s fantastic that these characters are included, but what’s truly remarkable is their impact on the game’s finale. The number of characters you recruit will determine how much time you have to beat Kaido in the climactic battle at Onigashima.
Dawn of Liberation Delivers a Grand One Piece Adventure

Each character feels distinct and offers different skills. Success depends on teamwork and clear communication to combine those skills effectively. The game doesn’t have set turns, allowing players to coordinate and react to situations as a team. As you achieve each character’s individual objectives, you can improve their stats and abilities by upgrading their card.
This also doesn’t consider developing the story, finding the right balance between using samurai for protection and letting players achieve their objectives, and the need to rescue characters from jail to maintain progress.
This game has a lot happening at once, which might seem overwhelming initially. However, it quickly comes together into a really enjoyable experience – especially for fans of the series. Even if you’re new to it, you’ll still have fun building your team and rolling the dice. I’ve been very impressed with One Piece: Dawn of Liberation and I’m eager to play more!
