Pedro Pascal has enjoyed a string of successful years across both film and television. Post his impressive portrayal of General Acacius in the 2024 sequel “Gladiator II”, fans have been treated to an array of captivating roles in 2025. This includes reprising Joel Miller for HBO Max’s second season of “The Last of Us”. Lately, Pascal has starred in Celine Song’s romantic comedy “Hearts Entwined” alongside Chris Evans and Dakota Johnson, followed by Ari Aster’s contemporary western dark comedy “Eddington”, currently showing in theaters, where he shared screen time with Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone. Moreover, Marvel Studios’ eagerly awaited “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, featuring Pascal as Dr. Reed Richards aka Mister Fantastic – alongside Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach – is set for release in theaters this Friday, July 25th.
Starting this Friday, August 8th in the U.S., the unique blend of genres in Pascal’s movie titled “Freaky Tales” will premiere exclusively on HBO Max. Starring alongside Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, and the late Angus Cloud, as well as Tom Hanks, this Lionsgate production is not to be missed.
In the official summary, the story titled “Freaky Tales“, which takes place in Oakland, California in 1987, presents a vibrant assortment of characters – an NBA player, a dishonest police officer, a female rap duo, rebellious teenagers, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector – who are all heading towards a clash in a frenzied sequence of confrontations and conflicts.
This movie, titled “Pascal,” is a compilation of four intertwined narratives. In one of these stories, Pascal, who is portrayed by the actor, assumes the role of Clint, a debt collector. Unfortunately for him, his latest job turns out to be disastrous. The performance of this actor is widely considered exceptional and stands out among all others in the movie. “Pascal” was penned and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who were also responsible for the 2019 hit film, Captain Marvel. In an interview with ComicBook earlier this year, the directors mentioned that replicating the 1990s setting of the Brie Larson-led Marvel Cinematic Universe production was a more complex task compared to depicting the 1980s Oakland of the “Freaky Tales” series on screen.
Fleck explained that the ’90s seemed harder for him because it felt closer in time. He identified with being an adult during the ’90s, even though he was still a teenager at the time. He also graduated from high school in ’97, which made him feel more independent and self-reliant. In contrast, the ’80s seemed much further away because he felt like a child then, making it seem easier to romanticize and reminisce about that era.
In January 2024, I was part of the fortunate crowd that got a first look at “Freaky Tales” at the Sundance Film Festival. After making its way through theaters, it officially opened on April 4, 2025. For those eagerly waiting for its HBO Max debut, you can already catch it by renting or buying it on Prime Video.
