New PlayStation Report Reveals PS5 DualSense Feature Fans Have Wanted for Years

A recent report suggests that PlayStation is working on an updated version of the DualSense controller for the PS5, and it includes a feature fans have been asking for a long time. The DualSense is already widely considered an excellent controller by PlayStation players. Its features, like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and comfortable design, lead many to believe it’s the best controller available on today’s gaming consoles. However, players have consistently requested a few specific improvements, and it appears PlayStation may be about to address one of them.

According to information shared by PPE, Sony is reportedly developing an updated version of the DualSense controller. Internally referred to as “DualSense V3”, this new controller is expected to be largely similar to the existing models. However, a key improvement will be a removable battery – a first for PlayStation controllers. Reports suggest the new DualSense will launch in November 2025, alongside the anticipated new PS5 Pro console. More details are expected to emerge closer to the release date.

Why Does This New DualSense Feature Matter?

Some PlayStation players might see a removable battery in the DualSense as a move in the wrong direction. It’s understandable to wonder why anyone would prefer swapping batteries when PlayStation controllers already have rechargeable ones that function perfectly well. However, there are two key reasons behind this change.

So, as a gamer, I’ve noticed that over time, the batteries in my DualSense controllers just don’t hold a charge like they used to. When they were new, I could usually get around 10 to 12 hours of playtime, but after a lot of recharging, that definitely goes down. Honestly, most of us PlayStation players don’t bother trying to replace the battery ourselves. It’s usually just easier to buy a new controller when the battery life gets too short.

I’ve noticed a lot of other gamers like me actually *prefer* using AA batteries or other rechargeable ones in their controllers. It’s great because they tend to last a really long time – we’re talking dozens of hours of gameplay before needing a change! Sure, you eventually have to swap them out, but honestly, a lot of us actually prefer this to controllers with built-in batteries. It’s just more convenient for some of us!

We’re still not sure if a new version of the DualSense controller is coming, but it would fit with what Sony has been doing lately. For instance, the DualSense Edge allows users to swap out thumbsticks if they start to experience drift. This means the entire controller doesn’t need replacing if just one part fails, keeping it in good shape for a long time. Sony might now be applying this same idea to the standard DualSense controllers, making them last longer than previous models.

If this report is correct and the controller ships in November, we’ll likely hear more details about the “DualSense V3” before long. Keep checking back with ComicBook in the days and weeks ahead for the latest updates.
