The Roles Have Reversed: In the latest trailer for ‘Predator: Badlands’, director Dan Trachtenberg continues his Predator saga following 2022’s ‘Prey’ and this year’s animated series ‘Predator: Killer of Killers’. Here, a young Yautja named Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) embarks on his first hunt on the deadliest planet in the cosmos. Accompanied by android Thia (Elle Fanning), a creation from the Weyland-Yutani Bio-Weapons Division, the corporation known from the ‘Alien’ series, offers assistance to Dek in tracking down the ultimate predator on Kalisk, the ruthless “Death Planet” where only the strongest can endure.
“Here, you’re not the predator,” Thia tells Dek in the footage, below. “You’re the prey.”
In his conversation with Bloody Disgusting, Trachtenberg expressed that while movies have always been a source of inspiration, he was particularly captivated by the video game “Shadow of the Colossus”. The game features a protagonist accompanied by another character who adds depth and emotion. This element in “Shadow of the Colossus” sparked an idea for the latest Predator film, Predator: Badlands. Trachtenberg wanted to explore the Predator with a contrasting companion – someone who is the antithesis of the Predator. Unlike the Predator, this character, played by Fanning, is not reserved; she’s capable in ways that he isn’t physically. There’s an exciting physical aspect of her performance that Trachtenberg can’t wait for audiences to see. However, he intends to let some aspects of the story unfold naturally.
Predator: Badlands is only in theaters November 7.
