As a huge Predator fan, I’m so excited! Disney and 20th Century Studios just dropped the final trailer for the new movie, *Predator: Badlands*, and it looks amazing. It’s directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who brought us the fantastic *Prey* and *Predator: Killer of Killers*. It’s been over eight years since we last saw a *Predator* movie in theaters – the last one didn’t really hit the mark – but honestly, the franchise is in a really good place right now. Trachtenberg’s previous films were critically acclaimed, so I’m feeling really optimistic about *Badlands*!
The new Predator film is taking a surprising turn. While fans were excited for a sequel to 2022’s *Prey*, *Predator: Badlands* is heading in a completely unexpected direction. However, the recent animated anthology, *Predator: Killer of Killers*, hinted that all these films are more connected than we thought, meaning anyone could potentially appear. *Predator: Badlands* is scheduled for release in theaters on November 7th. You can watch the trailer below.
Predator: Badlands Promises Something Different From Any Film in the Franchise
Unlike previous *Predator* stories, *Badlands* focuses on a young Predator named Dek, played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. Dek needs to prove his skills on a dangerous planet – exactly the kind of place a Predator should excel in. However, he’s not as prepared for the environment as more experienced Predators, and seems particularly challenged by a massive creature featured in the trailer, which appears to be his primary target.
At this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, the first 15 minutes of *Predator: Badlands* were shown, giving fans a better understanding of the film’s story and revealing a detail hidden in the trailer. The footage explained why Dek travels to this dangerous planet – he’s considered the underdog of his clan and has chosen a particularly risky mission, even feared by his own father, the chieftain. Importantly, the movie doesn’t translate the Predator language into English. Instead, *Predator: Badlands* uses the creatures’ language and provides subtitles. While the new trailer does show Predators communicating with subtitles, it primarily focuses on the English-speaking character played by Elle Fanning, a synthetic being from Weyland-Yutani.
It’s difficult to predict how fans will react to the fact that much of *Predator: Badlands* features subtitles for the alien creatures’ vocalizations, something the trailer doesn’t fully showcase. However, the film’s constant action and strong ties to the *Alien* universe might actually appeal to dedicated fans *because* the Predator language isn’t directly translated. Only time will tell how audiences respond, but the franchise seems to be in capable hands, making director Trachternberg’s bold approach commendable.
