The upcoming film, *Predator: Badlands*, is set to significantly change the direction of the *Predator* franchise. Following the success of 2022’s *Prey*, which already took the series in a fresh direction, director Dan Trachtenberg appears to have been given creative control and is pushing boundaries even further. In a major departure from previous *Predator* movies, *Badlands* will feature a Predator as the main character, rather than a human trying to survive. This is just one of several big changes planned for the new film.
While the MPA hasn’t officially rated *Predator: Badlands* yet, the filmmakers are aiming for a PG-13 rating. IGN reported that this decision was considered throughout the entire production. Fan reactions have been mixed, with some expressing curiosity and concern. However, *Predator: Badlands* was specifically made to avoid the issues with MPA ratings that previous *Predator* films have faced.
Predator: Badlands Is Aiming for a PG-13 Rating, But It Makes Sense
When news broke that *Predator: Badlands* would be rated PG-13, many fans on the Predator subreddit expressed their disappointment. One user cautiously stated they were fine with the rating as long as the story was good, but the most popular reply was a firm demand for intense violence: “I want CARNAGE.” The discussion continued with many other reactions.
“Whack, everyone who’s saying its fine is just coping,” wrote one user.
“This has Disney written all over it,” another theorized.
Since the original *Predator* movie came out in 1987, every film in the series has been rated R. From John McTiernan’s first installment to this year’s animated film, *Predator: Killer of Killers*, they’ve all earned that mature rating. For decades, *Predator* movies have been known for their intense violence and gore. So, what’s different about *Predator: Badlands*? And why is it okay?
Producer Ben Rosenblatt shared that the team aimed for *Predator: Badlands* to feel intense like an R-rated film, while still achieving a PG-13 rating. This might sound contradictory, but *Badlands* has a different story than previous *Predator* movies. This film features a Predator as the main character, and notably, there are no humans present. Because of this, the film’s violence won’t involve human blood, which, surprisingly, makes it more likely to receive a PG-13 rating.
Rosenblatt confirmed they aren’t using any real human blood in their work. They believe this will be a benefit, allowing them to create impressively disturbing effects – but without using the color red.
The trailers for *Predator: Badlands* promise a lot of action, showing the Predator battling not just other alien creatures, but also synthetic humans from the Weyland-Yutani corporation. This means the film will likely feature the signature green blood of the Predator, the white fluid from the *Alien* synths, and whatever color blood the other aliens have. However, fans are skeptical, with one commenter on Reddit pointing out the disappointing result of the previous crossover film, *Alien vs. Predator*.
