The action films produced by Amazon’s MGM Studios consistently capture the attention of Prime Video subscribers, with their latest releases becoming the top summer must-watch movies. Amazon’s movies have a significant impact on the platform, as evidenced by Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ Christmas action comedy “Red One” maintaining its position as the most-watched film since it attracted 50 million views shortly after its debut. Similarly, “The Accountant 2,” starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal, was a success, accumulating 80 million views in just its first month.
Heads of State, the latest addition, has joined Amazon MGM Studios’ elite group of top-performing movies on Prime Video. Starring Idris Elba and John Cena, this film premiered on July 2, 2025, and has garnered over 75 million viewers globally since its release, placing it as the fourth most-watched Amazon MGM Studios’ movie on Prime Video. As reported by Deadline, it trails behind The Tomorrow War (No. 3), The Accountant 2 (No. 2), and Red One (No. 1).
As a movie enthusiast, I’d say: In this thrilling flick, I step into the shoes of Elba as UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke, and Cena portrays U.S. President Will Derringer – two leaders whose public feud jeopardizes their nations’ alliance. Forced to collaborate when we’re both marked by a formidable and relentless foreign foe, I join forces with MI6 agent Noel Bisset (played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas). Together, we must stay one step ahead, find common ground, and act swiftly enough to foil a grand scheme that could endanger the entire free world.
Under the direction of Ilya Naishuller and featuring performances by Paddy Considine, Stephen Root, Carla Gugino, Jack Quaid, and Sarah Niles, this movie has garnered significant popularity since its premiere. Notably, it secured the first position on Nielsen’s Movie chart with 1.098 billion minutes watched during its initial week. Furthermore, for four consecutive weeks, it held the top spot on Prime Video. Although it has moved down from that premier position, it currently ranks second, as per FlixPatrol data, following War of the Worlds.
Beyond the top streaming rankings, the movie “Heads of State” is receiving generally positive reviews from both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it’s been given a fresh rating, with 70% approval from critics and 71% from viewers. Critics’ consensus suggests that although the film’s portrayal of geopolitics might be overly cute, the comedic partnership between Idris Elba and John Cena is robust in this action-packed film.
Currently, the film titled “Heads of State” stands alone, but there’s potential for a follow-up if audiences show interest and enjoy it enough. In an interview with Screenrant, Naishuller hinted that under such circumstances, “a second one could definitely be in the works.” He expressed his desire to delve deeper into the characters of Jack and Marty if Amazon sees fit based on audience response.
Heads of State is available to stream on Prime Video now.
