New PS3 System Update Shockingly Released by Sony, Here’s What It Does

Sony recently released an unexpected update for the PlayStation 3. With the PS3 celebrating its 20th anniversary this year – it first launched in November 2006 – Sony continues to support the console even after releasing the PS4 and PS5 over the last two decades.

The PS3 system update 4.93 is now available worldwide. This update focuses on improving the console’s performance and doesn’t include any major new features. If you were hoping for significant changes, you won’t find them in this release.

Will This Be the Last PS3 Update?

This might be the final update for the PS3. Sony hadn’t released an update for the PlayStation 3 in over a year, with the previous one arriving in March 2025, and before that, February 2024.

It looks like Sony consistently releases at least one update for the PS3 in the early part of each year. While it’s uncertain if they’ll keep doing this in 2026, it’s good to see they still support the console.

Given enough time, Sony will probably start shutting down the remaining online services for the PS3. The PlayStation Store, surprisingly, is still working on PS3 even though Sony attempted to close it in 2021. While it’s expected to eventually close, it doesn’t seem like that will happen in the near future.
