Tomorrow, July 24th, Sony is beginning beta testing for a fresh PS5 firmware update, which features a long-anticipated capability: simultaneous pairing of your DualSense controller with multiple devices.
Those involved in the PS5 beta testing should anticipate receiving an email tomorrow with a download code for initiating the firmware update. The main attraction in this update is the ability to connect your PS5 controller to multiple devices simultaneously, streamlining the switching process between them without requiring repeated pairing procedures.
As per the PlayStation Blog, here’s a step-by-step guide to the feature:
- Make sure the light bar and player indicator on your controller is off. If they’re turned on, press and hold the PS button until they turn off.
- Press and hold one of the action buttons (triangle, circle, cross, or square) and the PS button for over 5 seconds. The light bar and player indicator flash two times.
- Turn on Bluetooth on your device, and select the option to add Bluetooth devices. Your device detects nearby Bluetooth devices.
- Select your controller from the detected devices. The light bar lights up, and the player indicator’s lights blink according to the slot number.
From that point, you can set a command prompt on your PS5 controller for each device. For instance, to set the first slot, press and hold the main PlayStation button while simultaneously pressing the Triangle button for approximately three seconds. The second slot is assigned to the Circle button, the third slot uses the Cross or X button, and the fourth slot corresponds with the Square button.
By doing this, you can simultaneously connect the controller to as many as four devices and set up unique button combinations for each. For further details, check out the PlayStation Blog.
So far, it’s necessary to re-pair the DualSense or DualSense Edge wireless controller every time you connect it to a new device like a PC, Mac, or mobile devices.
In this latest update, you’ll be able to manage up to four devices concurrently, and effortlessly transition between them using the controller. For instance, you might grab your controller that is typically used with your PlayStation 5, then smoothly switch over to a PC for some PC gaming, or connect it to a smartphone for Remote Play functionality from your PS5. This increased versatility allows for more fluid gameplay experiences across various devices.
In the official release of the PS5 firmware update coming up, Sony unveils a fresh Power Saver mode that will be accessible in the settings menu. Unlike the beta version, this feature won’t be included in the test phase commencing tomorrow.
In compatible PlayStation 5 games, enabling this feature will “diminish performance slightly and let your PS5 conserve energy. If you don’t enable it, or if games don’t support this feature, the performance won’t be adjusted, and energy usage will remain unchanged.
This feature aligns with Sony’s promise to achieve carbon neutrality (net-zero greenhouse gas emissions) throughout their entire supply chain by fiscal year 2040, as verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), starting from the base year of 2018.
