A remastered version of a popular PlayStation 2 game is now available on PS5, and players absolutely love it – it has a perfect user review score. This is quite surprising considering the game received a 69 out of 100 from critics on Metacritic, which isn’t a particularly high score. However, it’s becoming more and more common for critics and players to have different opinions about games. This release is a striking example: the game currently boasts a 4.95 out of 5-star rating on the PlayStation Store based on 538 reviews. That translates to a 99 out of 100 on Metacritic – a score only one other game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, has ever achieved.
Crystal Dynamics has recently released a remastered version of their 2003 game, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, called Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered. The original game received mixed reviews, scoring between 70 and 75 on Metacritic, but was a hit with players on PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Its continued popularity led to this remaster, which is currently the top-rated 2024 release on the PlayStation Store based on user reviews.
2003 PS2 and Xbox Game
If you’re not familiar with Legacy of Kain: Defiance, it was developed by Crystal Dynamics – the studio behind the Tomb Raider games – and released in 2003 by Eidos Interactive. It was the fifth and last game in the Legacy of Kain series, which originally started in 1996. The series has been on hold for over twenty years, but it started making a comeback in 2024 with Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered, and now it’s back again. This year will also see the release of Legacy of Kain: Ascendance, a completely new game, though it’s a bit of a departure as a 2D metroidvania.
If you’re a fan of Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered, it’s currently available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 for $24.99 and has received excellent reviews on the PlayStation Store. It’s worth noting that while the game is enhanced for PS4 Pro, it isn’t enhanced for PS5.
This updated version features improved HD graphics, more responsive controls, and a modern camera. Players can switch between the new visuals and the original graphics, and there’s a photo mode for capturing gameplay. It also includes alternate character looks, a detailed lore section, and excitingly, previously unreleased content and levels that were cut from the original game.
