It’s common for online games that are constantly updated (often called “live service” games) to eventually stop being supported. We’ve recently seen several, even from popular series like The Elder Scrolls, end their run. Sometimes, though, games close down very quickly after launching, usually because they didn’t earn enough money through sales or in-game purchases to stay afloat. Recently, one game that generated a lot of excitement during a Steam event announced it will be shutting down just weeks after its official release.
The Cube, Save Us was an action game set in a post-apocalyptic world, focusing on close-quarters combat in a player-versus-player and player-versus-environment setting. While its demo was very popular during a Steam event in October 2025, the full game, released on PC in March, didn’t maintain that momentum. The developers have announced that the game will shut down on May 8th.
The Cube, Save Us Announces End of Service With Full Refunds for In-Game Purchases

XLGames announced on April 8th that their game, The Cube, Save Us, will be closing down on May 8th. While they thanked players for their support, they didn’t explain why the game is shutting down. It’s likely that low player numbers and negative reviews on Steam contributed to the decision. Multiplayer games need a large and active player base to thrive, and free-to-play games especially rely on players being engaged enough to make purchases. Unfortunately, The Cube, Save Us didn’t reach the level of popularity needed to stay online.
The game launched on March 17th with over 5,100 players online at the same time, but the number quickly dropped. Currently, around 180 players are active, with a recent high of 295 in a 24-hour period. However, the main challenge to growing the player base is likely the game’s negative reviews on Steam.
Since its release, The Cube, Save Us has received mixed reviews. Many players have been disappointed by problems with the game servers and found the combat repetitive. Some also feel the game relies too much on players spending money to succeed, even calling it greedy. However, reviews often praise the game’s graphics, and it did gain a dedicated following. Following the recent announcement that the game is shutting down, many reviewers have expressed sadness about its end.

There’s some good news for players who bought the game The Cube, Save Us despite its recent shutdown. XL Games has announced that everyone who legally purchased the game on Steam will receive a full refund. They’ve even confirmed that most refunds were already processed as of April 9th. While it’s disappointing to see the game close before it could find a wider audience, players who supported it will at least get their money back.
The game The Cube, Save Us will no longer be available after Friday, May 8th. This includes the game’s official Discord server, which will also be closed at that time. You can still download and play the game on Steam until then if you’d like to try it out.
