The much-awaited “State of Play” events by PlayStation are typically highlights of the year for console users, offering exciting trailers and sneak peeks of upcoming games before their release dates. Recently, it’s been announced that a new State of Play is on the horizon, and it seems to be centered around updating on a trailer shown in June, which signals the comeback of a timeless media franchise to gaming: James Bond and his number 007.
In a blog post published on Monday, PlayStation announced that the next State of Play will air on September 3rd at 2:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. PT. During this event, we’ll get our first in-depth look at the new game “007 First Light,” which was initially unveiled during the June State of Play. This is the first new James Bond video game since 2012, when “007 Legends” was released, marking the longest gap in the franchise’s history since video games based on the Bond series began being produced in 1982. The development of this new title is a collaborative effort between IO Interactive and Amazon MGM Studios.
A Younger Bond Has To Prove Himself to MI6
For a 2026 debut, the game titled “007 First Light” offers a unique perspective on James Bond. Unlike a seasoned and suave MI6 agent, players will experience the story of a raw Bond, who hasn’t yet earned his reputation.
As a gaming enthusiast, mark your calendars! In the upcoming State of Play, I’m pumped to delve into over 30 minutes of thrilling gameplay showcasing Bond’s debut mission as an MI6 agent. Buckle up for a rollercoaster ride that encompasses heart-pounding car chases, exhilarating stealth sequences, and nail-biting shootouts. After the action-packed playthrough, get ready to hear from IO Interactive about the intricate espionage gameplay that promises an intense spy adventure!
In the first trailer, James Bond is depicted as a prodigious child, consistently outshining his peers in school, yet often butting heads with the adults in charge, especially following the death of his parents. Unlike previous portrayals of Bond, who are more suave and composed, 007 First Light presents a character who is impulsive and described as “aimless,” or like a bullet without a designated target. The teaser also hints at the villain in 007 First Light potentially being another MI6 agent.
In simpler terms, the new Bond game seems influenced by series such as Uncharted, featuring dramatic action sequences and a strong emphasis on storytelling. Given IO Interactive’s history of creating games like Hitman, they seem well-suited to develop this grittier version of Bond, who must navigate espionage, stealthy maneuvers, and all-out combat.
At Summer Game Fest, IO Interactive shared insights about their edgy James Bond character, discussing the stark difference compared to traditional Bonds, and hinting at the need for him to learn spy skills within his new environment.
In an interview with ComicBook in June, IO Interactive Franchise Director Jonathan Lacaille explained that when developing a younger version of Bond for their game, they had to consider his background and evolution into the iconic character we know today. The portrayal of this character will exhibit more unrefined traits like charisma, intelligence, but without the polished weaponization we see in films. In our game, he’s impulsive, focused on the mission, believing it’s right, and acting independently, even disregarding orders at times. M recognizes his potential in the storyline.
Enthusiasts of James Bond are buzzing with anticipation about the game, given the sneak peeks and considering the long-standing scarcity of video games based on the character. In February, Amazon MGM Studios invested a billion dollars to secure rights to James Bond IP, signifying a new epoch for adaptations. Although IO Interactive seems to be spearheading their vision for Bond, they’ve faced at least one minor constraint in the development of 007 First Light.
Are you looking forward to the new James Bond video game? Do you think selecting the Hitman team was an astute move for this renowned franchise?
