Many science fiction fans consider *The Expanse* to be a beautifully written and visually impressive series. It’s based on the novels by James S.A. Corey-the combined pen name of authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck-and takes place in a future where Earth, Mars, and the asteroid belt are locked in a fierce struggle for resources and power. Despite its popularity, the show was canceled twice, ultimately concluding after six seasons on Amazon Prime. Although the authors say the sixth season provided a fitting ending, there are still three books in the series that haven’t been made into episodes.
Fans are getting more of *The Expanse*, but not as a traditional TV season. Three years after the show ended, the story continues in a graphic novel called *The Expanse: A Little Death*. Wes Chatham, who played Amos Burton, co-wrote the novel, which focuses on his character. While it’s great to see the universe expanded in comic form, many fans hoping for a seventh season on screen will likely be disappointed.
Why The Expanse: A Little Death Can’t Replace Season 7

With the release of Book Seven, *Persepolis Rising*, the story of *The Expanse* takes a major turn. The narrative jumps forward thirty years and expands beyond our solar system, now exploring other star systems linked by the Ring Gates. This introduces new enemies and sees entire groups gain and lose power, significantly broadening the story’s scope. Because the first six seasons of the show did such a good job of adapting the books, fans are excited to see this expanded story and follow the Rocinante crew to its conclusion.
As much as I love a beautifully crafted graphic novel, I have to admit a TV series just *hits* differently – the reach and visual impact are on another level. And this new comic, *A Little Death* Issue #1 (you can find it at BOOM! Studios), is especially exciting for me as a fan. It doesn’t bother with the novel storylines at all! Instead, it picks up just two years after the end of Season 6 of the show, acting as a fantastic bridge to the events of Book 7. It’s like getting extra content that fits perfectly into the world I already adore.
The show’s cancellation and the shift to a comic book format have left fans disappointed, as they were eager to see the original cast – Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, Wes Chatham, and Shohreh Aghdashloo – continue their roles in the new storyline. It’s difficult for viewers to accept that these actors won’t be returning, even though a time jump might have created production challenges. Hollywood has overcome similar hurdles before, and fans were really hoping to see these characters face new adventures outside our solar system.
As a huge fan of *The Expanse*, I’m really hoping this new graphic novel, *A Little Death*, gives us a glimpse of what could have been. I always loved Amos, and Wes Chatham brought him to life so well – I have a feeling that passion will really come through in this story too. Honestly, if this does well, maybe Amazon will reconsider finishing the show and giving us those last three seasons we all want! It’s hard not to wish this was a new season of the show instead of a comic, though. It just feels like it should be more.
Despite some disappointment among fans, the creators successfully concluded *The Expanse* after six seasons with an ending that many found satisfying. It’s still considered one of the best science fiction shows of the 21st century. Though fans might wonder what could have been, the series remains a brilliant, thoughtful, and character-focused epic, and continues to be a benchmark for the genre.
