New Silent Hill Adaptation Fails To End The Horror Franchise’s Abysmal Rotten Tomatoes Streak

The new movie, Return to Silent Hill, unfortunately hasn’t broken the series’ pattern of poor reviews. This is the third film in the Silent Hill franchise, which started with the 2006 movie based on the popular 1999 video game. The second film, Silent Hill: Revelation, came out in 2012.

Critics haven’t been kind to the new movie Return to Silent Hill, giving it a very low 7% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is based on 15 reviews so far, and the score could change as more come in. We’ll have to wait and see what audiences think โ€“ a score from viewers isn’t available yet, but should be soon after the film hits theaters on January 23rd.

Unfortunately, the new film, Return to Silent Hill, hasn’t improved the franchise’s poor performance on Rotten Tomatoes. The previous films, Silent Hill (2006) and Silent Hill: Revelation (2012), received critic scores of 33% and 8% respectively, along with audience scores of 63% and 35%.

Christophe Gans directed and co-wrote Return to Silent Hill, a film inspired by the video game Silent Hill 2. The story centers on a man who gets a puzzling letter from a former love and is compelled to revisit Silent Hill, a town he remembers but is now shrouded in a disturbing darkness. While searching for her, he faces terrifying monsters and discovers a horrifying reality that threatens his mental state.

I’m really excited about the cast they’ve assembled! Jeremy Irvine is playing James Sunderland, and Hannah Emily Anderson is taking on the role of Mary. But what’s especially cool is that Evie Templeton, who actually was Laura in the new Silent Hill 2 game โ€“ both the voice and motion capture โ€“ is reprising the character for this movie. It’s awesome to see that connection!

Most critics agree that Return to Silent Hill is visually impressive, but doesn’t quite capture the spirit of the original game. Director Christophe Gans successfully recreated the game’s creepy and unsettling atmosphere, but the movie falls short in delivering the psychological depth, tension, and fear that made the game so impactful. It’s a visually striking film, but ultimately feels emotionally empty.

The main issue with the movie is its story, which many find confusing, boring, or just doesn’t make sense. The main character doesn’t feel involved, and the ending isn’t satisfying. The scares aren’t very effective, the acting is over-the-top, and the special effects look old. Even people who like the original game say the only thing going for it is how familiar it is. Overall, critics agree that Return to Silent Hill is a letdown as both an adaptation and a horror movie.
