Without the Star Trek name, this show wouldn’t get made at all. The plot is weak, and it relies on watered-down dialogue to mask the superficial characters and overall lack of substance, using sci-fi elements as a thin disguise.
ComicBook’s review took a balanced approach, suggesting that fans of the Star Trek era led by Kurtzman will likely enjoy the show. However, it also notes that longtime fans might find something to appreciate if they give it a chance. The reviewer emphasized that the show stays true to the spirit of Star Trek and Roddenberry’s vision, and found the premise of seeing Starfleet crew members during their training at the Academy to be compelling enough to sustain the series, Starfleet Academy.
Look, everyone will have their own opinion, but most critics seem to think Starfleet Academy delivers what Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fans want – and that’s a good thing, considering how great Strange New Worlds has been. It might not be quite as amazing, but it definitely feels like it fits right in.
