The series The Mandalorian and Grogu is addressing a major issue with the Star Wars story that arose after the last set of films. When Din Djarin first appeared in The Mandalorian, he followed a surprising rule: Mandalorians weren’t allowed to take off their helmets. This seemed to contradict what fans had seen in The Clone Wars and Rebels. We later discovered this strict rule was due to Din belonging to a group called the Children of the Watch, a very traditional and strict sect of Mandalorians.
It initially appeared that Din Djarin was going to leave the strict religious group known as the Children of the Watch. He’d already shown his devotion to Grogu by removing his helmet in Season 2, proving their strong bond. However, Season 3 surprised viewers when Din quickly regained his honor by completing a traditional ritual on Mandalore. Now, the story is moving towards a new chapter – a feature film where Din Djarin will be the focus, and he’s clearly ready to take off his helmet again.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Features Din Djarin Unmasked

The rule about the helmet was likely just a way to cover up a scheduling issue. Pedro Pascal, who plays Din Djarin, is a very in-demand actor and wasn’t always available to film. Actually, Pascal shares the role with stunt performers Lateef Crowder and Brendan Wayne. Pascal is particularly keen to prioritize his time for the upcoming theatrical release of The Mandalorian and Grogu, and he’s been heavily involved in promoting it. It seems Din Djarin’s identity is about to be revealed.
This situation presents a challenge for Lucasfilm. They want to avoid a predictable storyline where Din Djarin repeatedly removes his helmet and revisits Mandalore. More importantly, revisiting that conflict wouldn’t have much impact now that Mandalore has already been reclaimed at the end of Season 3; a story focused on Din’s “redemption” would feel insignificant. If Din Djarin is going to show his face in the new series, the show’s underlying mythology needs to develop and offer something new.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is Already Changing Mandalorian Lore
The latest marketing for The Mandalorian and Grogu has finally explained a key detail. A new clip reveals the Hutt twins teasing Din Djarin for taking off his helmet, predicting he’ll face consequences. Din retorts with a threat – that they’ll all die – which is a major turning point. It’s now clear that simply being unmasked isn’t Din’s concern; it’s the fact that he revealed his face to others and allowed them to live. This is a clever development, as it instantly adds tension to any scene where Din’s face is exposed. It means he feels compelled to eliminate anyone who has seen it.
This development aligns well with the established Mandalorian traditions, which have historically focused on warfare and conflict. This is especially true for groups like the Children of the Watch, who strictly adhere to the ancient, more aggressive Mandalorian customs, and would likely support such a rule. This subtle shift also cleverly allows Din Djarin to remove his helmet in the film, enables Pedro Pascal to be featured in promotional materials for The Mandalorian and Grogu, and maintains consistency with the existing storyline while avoiding predictable or unchallenging plots. It was a very insightful decision by Lucasfilm.
