A new *Star Wars* game has launched to mixed reviews. Critics haven’t been impressed, giving it a score of 54 on Metacritic. However, players seem to be enjoying it much more, with an average user score of 4.2 out of 5 – which translates to 82 on Metacritic.
The new *Star Wars* game, *Star Wars: Beyond Victory*, hasn’t gotten much attention because it’s a mixed-reality game designed specifically for the Oculus Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets. Essentially, it’s only available on those devices, meaning a relatively small number of people – around one million – can actually play it. That’s likely why you haven’t heard about it yet.
About the Game
Star Wars: Beyond Victory is a mixed reality game with three ways to play. One mode, ‘Adventure Mode,’ lets you take on the role of Volo Bolus, a hopeful pilot mentored by the famous podracer Sebulba. This mode tells a brand new Star Wars story, though it’s not officially part of the established Star Wars timeline.
There’s also “Arcade Mode,” which lets you experience traditional podracing. In this mode, your cockpit turns into a holographic table, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the race.
Finally, there’s “Playset Mode,” where you can build your own *Star Wars* adventures. It’s a creative sandbox with customizable characters, vehicles, and other elements to play with.
What’s Good, What’s Bad
The game is currently a top seller on the Meta Store and is receiving positive feedback from players. Reviewers especially like how it blends augmented and virtual reality, and appreciate the diverse range of gameplay modes with its polished presentation. However, while there’s a good variety of modes, they don’t offer much depth or reason to play again. Additionally, the podracing isn’t considered the best experience for Star Wars fans.
When we tried out the new *Star Wars* game, we noticed it includes plenty of nods to the franchise’s history with recognizable characters and locations, even while telling a fresh story. But, like a lot of players, we thought the game just didn’t have enough to do overall in any of its different modes.
