Star Wars has consistently pushed the boundaries of visual effects, and a recent breakthrough is a technology called The Volume. This innovation is changing how movies are made by allowing filmmakers to create any environment – from deserts to arctic landscapes – right on a soundstage using large HD screens. It first gained attention during the filming of *The Mandalorian* and effectively combines real and digital elements. However, some filmmakers have felt that the technology, known as StageCraft, can be limiting because it confines shooting to a set, restricting camera and actor movement. Lucasfilm seems to be responding to this feedback with its upcoming film.
Shawn Levy, the director of the upcoming *Star Wars* film, posted a photo on Instagram featuring Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray. The actors were photographed on a boat in the Mediterranean Sea, presumably filming a scene set on an ocean planet in the movie. You can see the picture below.
Star Wars Is Embracing Shooting On Practical Locations
As a huge fan of shows like *The Mandalorian*, I was so impressed with how they used this amazing technology called The Volume – basically a huge, wraparound screen for backgrounds. It’s been used a lot since then in *Obi-Wan Kenobi* and the first season of *Ahsoka*, and I’m sure we’ll see it again in things like the next *Mandalorian & Grogu* series. But it sounds like the filmmakers are also trying to mix things up! I recently heard that season two of *Ahsoka* is being filmed over in the UK, which will let them try out different filming methods and styles, and I think that’s really exciting!
The new show *Starfighter* appears to be following the production style of the acclaimed *Star Wars: Andor*. *Andor* was the first live-action *Star Wars* series to move away from virtual sets-known as The Volume-and instead prioritize real locations and more elaborate, physical sets. This approach was a key factor in *Andor*’s success and contributed to its impressive, cinematic feel and large scope.
The new *Starfighter* movie will definitely feature lots of digital effects, and may even use virtual production technology like The Volume. However, it’s impressive that director Levy and his team went the extra mile to film on real water. The behind-the-scenes photos are beautiful, and the finished scene will likely be even more spectacular on the big screen. Shooting in a location like this allows for a more exciting and realistic action sequence. The actors can truly connect with their surroundings, rather than just performing in front of a green screen. This also gives Levy more freedom with camera angles to capture the perfect shot. Anyone familiar with *Jaws* knows how difficult water filming can be, but the authenticity really shows on screen. Audiences can always tell the difference between effects and practical locations.
The upcoming film, *Star Wars: Starfighter*, is a key project for Lucasfilm. With actors like Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams on board, it will serve as a test case for the studio’s new approach to *Star Wars* movies. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy appears to be encouraging filmmakers to create independent stories within the *Star Wars* universe, without needing to tie directly into existing storylines. *Starfighter* is intended as a standalone film, and its performance will significantly influence the types of *Star Wars* projects that move forward. The filmmakers are hoping to create a truly immersive experience for viewers by filming in realistic locations, which they believe will help *Starfighter* stand out.
