New Star Wars Retcon Explains Grogu’s Order 66 Origin Story At Last

In Season 3, The Mandalorian revealed a surprising flashback to the events of Order 66, showing how Grogu managed to survive the Jedi Purge. The scene depicted Jedi Master Kelleran Beq (played by Ahmed Best, known for his role as Jar Jar Binks) rescuing the young Grogu as clone troopers, led by Anakin Skywalker, stormed the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. While the flashback showed Grogu’s escape, it left many unanswered questions.

Kelleran Beq and Grogu headed for a ship ready to go, and it turned out to be a diplomatic vessel from Naboo, complete with Naboo guards helping them. This strongly suggested someone important on Naboo – with the authority to provide a ship and security – was secretly aiding Jedi fleeing Palpatine’s forces. Many fans wondered if Padmé Amidala was involved. However, a recent change to Star Wars history has now revealed the truth.

Kelleran Beq Was Working With Jar Jar Binks

Okay, so this is really cool! Ahmed Best, who played Jar Jar Binks, is back in the Star Wars universe, but this time as a writer! He co-wrote a new comic book focusing on Jar Jar, set during the Clone Wars. It’s a really interesting story – Kelleran Beq basically challenges Jar Jar to step up and help those worlds being exploited by the Republic to fuel the war. Beq points out that Jar Jar feels guilty about accidentally helping Palpatine gain power in Attack of the Clones, and he’s hoping Jar Jar can use his position as a diplomat to fix things. It’s great to see Best getting a chance to explore Jar Jar’s character in a new way!

It’s great to see Ahmed Best reprising his role, though this Star Wars story doesn’t completely change opinions about Jar Jar Binks. It does, however, give us a deeper understanding of his character and shows his remorse for proposing the emergency powers legislation in Attack of the Clones – something he’s often been criticized for. Even more interestingly, we learn that Jar Jar and Kelleran Beq remained friends and discovered a hidden communication system – the very same “fractal radio” later used by Luthen Rael in Andor.

Now We Know Why Naboo Forces Helped Kelleran Beq

Season 3 of The Mandalorian featured a thrilling flashback showing the events of Order 66 from Grogu’s perspective. A highlight was the surprise return of Ahmed Best, reprising his role as a Jedi Master from the Star Wars YouTube series. In the flashback, Beq told Grogu they were going to meet friends, but kept the details vague, leading fans to wonder if the Jedi had a secret escape plan that Anakin Skywalker didn’t know about. The appearance of Naboo guards also sparked theories about Padmé Amidala’s possible involvement.

It appears Beq was working secretly, distrustful of Palpatine due to his firsthand knowledge of what was happening across the galaxy. He had a private line to Senator Binks, which he likely activated as the clone troopers attacked the Jedi Temple, attempting to quickly evacuate people. He only managed to save one person, and even then, he was forced to leave Naboo soldiers behind as they fought against the Coruscant Guard.

Star Wars’ New Jar Jar Retcon Completely Changes the Prequel Trilogy

A recent story change has significant implications, going beyond just Grogu’s experience during Order 66. Season 1 of The Mandalorian showed that Grogu was protected from the Empire for over twenty years, which required a lot of money and hiring many Nikto mercenaries. It was always a mystery who funded this protection, as it likely wasn’t the Rebellion – they would have revealed Grogu after the Empire fell if they knew about him. Now, it seems likely that Jar Jar Binks, who wasn’t closely involved with the early Rebel Alliance, was the one who hired those mercenaries.

It’s logical that Jar Jar Binks would stay away from the Rebel Alliance. Since he initially supported giving Palpatine extra power, he’d be seen as an outcast and wouldn’t be trusted. However, a recent change to the story subtly portrays him as the very first rebel, working against Palpatine even before the Empire officially began. Interestingly, when he calls upon Naboo’s help during a fight with the Coruscant guard, it implies he had the support of Naboo’s Queen. This is particularly ironic considering Naboo is Palpatine’s home planet.

The Star Wars prequels showed Naboo as a planet Palpatine controlled and was willing to abandon. However, new information reveals the Naboo people actually grew to distrust Palpatine, possibly not sharing everything with Padmé, who had previously relied on him as a trusted advisor. This is a compelling addition to the story, enriching the well-known narrative and finally explaining how Grogu managed to survive the events of Order 66.
