New Star Wars: Starfighter Set Photo Includes Major Confirmation About the 2027 Movie

Following a break after the divisive Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Star Wars movies are coming back to theaters. While The Mandalorian & Grogu will be released next summer, many fans are especially excited about Star Wars: Starfighter, planned for 2027. Director Shawn Levy has gathered a talented cast, including Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams, and the film promises a completely new story, separate from previous Star Wars events. Though Starfighter is still a few years away, production has already reached an important stage.

I was so excited to see Ryan Levy post a new picture from the set of Starfighter on Instagram! It shows him running down a hallway – looks like they were really going for it! He also announced that they’ve officially finished filming, which is amazing! Now he’s moving on to editing and all the post-production work. You can check out the post on his page – it’s awesome!

Star Wars: Starfighter Continues a New Franchise Trend (and It’s Great)

As a huge Star Wars fan, I was surprised to learn that filming on Starfighter finished up right before Christmas 2025, even though it won’t be in theaters until May 2027! But honestly, this isn’t totally unexpected – the franchise has often worked on long timelines. Apparently, The Mandalorian & Grogu, coming out next Memorial Day in 2026, finished filming way back in October 2024. It seems Lucasfilm is really getting organized as they kick off this new wave of Star Wars films, finishing the main shooting well in advance. I think that’s a great sign for the future of the series.

Disney’s initial run of Star Wars films – including the sequel trilogy and standalone movies – faced a lot of problems behind the scenes. Despite aiming for a new Star Wars movie every year, some of these films felt rushed. For example, the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story went through a major change when director Ron Howard replaced Phil Lord & Chris Miller just months before its release, requiring significant reshoots. Similarly, J.J. Abrams took over directing Star Wars: Episode IX from Colin Trevorrow in 2017. Although the release date was delayed, the final movie felt hurried as Abrams and the team tried to create a fitting end to the long-running Skywalker Saga.

It’s hard to say how Solo or The Rise of Skywalker might have been different with more development time, but it appears The Mandalorian & Grogu and Starfighter are being given the time they need. Director Levy has almost a year and a half for post-production on Starfighter, including significant visual effects work – hopefully without overworking the artists. This timeline also allows for reshoots if needed, giving him the flexibility to add or adjust scenes as he edits the film.

It’s great that Lucasfilm is now allowing more time for its filmmakers. Because Star Wars movies are so complex, it’s practical to give directors the necessary time to focus on all the details. This also shows Lucasfilm is learning from past experiences. The success of shows like The Mandalorian & Grogu and the upcoming Starfighter are clearly important to the future of the franchise. With several other Star Wars movies in the works, these first two need to be successful and get fans excited again. While a longer development time doesn’t guarantee a better movie, it certainly increases the chances. Hopefully, future Star Wars films will also benefit from this more relaxed production schedule.
