Blizzard is expected to announce a new StarCraft game in 2026, but it won’t be what many fans are expecting. The original StarCraft, a hugely popular real-time strategy game, first launched in 1998 and was followed by StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty in 2010. Since a remastered version of the first game came out in 2017, Blizzard hasn’t released much new StarCraft content, leaving fans eager for more. While a new installment is reportedly in development, it appears to be a different type of game than the main StarCraft series.
Windows Central reports that Blizzard is planning to make StarCraft the main attraction at this year’s BlizzCon. While specific announcements haven’t been revealed, a new third-person shooter game set in the StarCraft universe is expected to be shown. This game, which has been the subject of rumors, appears to be in development, though details about its size and release date are still unknown.
Moving from the real-time strategy style of StarCraft to a third-person action game might raise some eyebrows, but Blizzard has tried this before. Back in the early 2000s, they developed StarCraft: Ghost, a shooter that was ultimately canceled, disappointing many fans. Now, over two decades later, Blizzard appears to be revisiting this type of game. Let’s hope this new project fares better than its predecessor.
There’s still no word on whether Blizzard will make a StarCraft 3. Even though StarCraft 2 is turning 15 this year, it remains a beloved and actively played game worldwide. Many fans continue to eagerly request a third installment. While a new game doesn’t seem imminent, Blizzard might offer a sneak peek at BlizzCon on September 12th and 13th.
