Over the years, many films have been based on Stephen King‘s work, with varying degrees of success. The newest adaptation, *The Long Walk*, is proving to be one of the better ones. Critics generally liked the movie before and after its release last weekend, specifically praising the acting and its gripping atmosphere. It briefly held the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of any Stephen King film, ultimately earning a “Certified Fresh” rating of 89%. It’s not just critics who are enjoying it; audiences seem to be impressed as well.
Viewers seem to really enjoy the recent Stephen King adaptations. The Long Walk currently has an 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, following The Life of Chuck’s 88% score. Both films have been well-received, a big jump in popularity compared to last year’s The Monkey, which only earned a 55% audience score and received mixed reactions.
Stephen King’s Rotten Tomatoes Trend Could Continue This Fall

With several Stephen King adaptations already released this year, another one is coming soon. Edgar Wright’s reimagining of *The Running Man* will premiere in November, and based on his past work, it’s likely to be a hit with audiences and earn a high score on Rotten Tomatoes. Throughout his career, Wright has consistently delivered well-received films that both critics and moviegoers have enjoyed. His only film to receive a negative audience score is his early, lesser-known debut, *A Fistful of Fingers* (54%). Even his lowest-rated film after that, 2013’s *The World’s End*, still has a respectable 72% audience score. All of his other movies have earned scores in the 80s or 90s.
Paramount is highly optimistic about *The Running Man* and plans to release it on as many IMAX screens as possible. While this new version aims to be more faithful to the original story with a realistic and serious feel, the trailers and promotional materials are fun and exciting, showcasing director Edgar Wright’s signature mix of action and humor to appeal to a wide audience. If the movie lives up to the hype, it’s likely to receive positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
Although *The Long Walk* was a welcome sign of success for Stephen King adaptations, positive buzz wasn’t enough to make it a box office smash. It opened in fourth place domestically with $11.5 million. While many other well-reviewed movies have become bigger hits than anticipated this year, *The Long Walk* struggled because it was released alongside blockbuster films like *The Conjuring: Last Rites* and *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle*. With a production budget of $20 million, *The Long Walk* still has a reasonable chance of becoming profitable overall.
While the movie didn’t do great in theaters, its strong scores on Rotten Tomatoes could make *The Long Walk* a hit on streaming services. When viewers are browsing for something to watch later, positive reviews from both critics and audiences will likely make it a standout choice. We’ve seen many movies with mixed reviews become popular on streaming, so this well-received Stephen King adaptation should easily find an audience at home.
