However, they’ll be welcoming some fresh faces to the gathering. One of these newcomers will be voiced by Conan O’Brien, and his character will play a crucial role in the movie’s exploration of traditional toys versus digital gadgets. In the upcoming project, Conan O’Brien will be lending his voice to a lovable electronic toy character named Smarty Pants. Fans got their first glimpse of this cute character courtesy of Destination 23, as shown in the image below (via Boardwalk Times). Although we don’t have any footage of Smarty Pants in action just yet, given Conan O’Brien’s reputation for sarcastic humor, it is safe to assume that Smarty Pants will be delivering plenty of witty remarks.

What We Know About Toy Story 5

In Toy Story 5, it’s anticipated that Smarty Pants will join other new characters. For now, details about the rest of the cast are still unfolding. However, we do have some exciting news – the film will reintroduce beloved series figures such as Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie. In this sequel, it seems that Jessie might take on a more prominent role compared to previous installments.

The main idea portrayed in the movie revolves around the transformation of toys, with traditional toys facing competition from digital and electronic toys. This tension was hinted at in the original “Toy Story,” when Woody struggled to adjust to the advanced Buzz Lightyear, and it will be intriguing to observe how Buzz handles being in a similar position as Woody, now that tablets and interactive toys are gaining more popularity, almost like they’ve taken over the toy box.

A True Smarty Pants

The extent to which Smarty Pants fits into the whole situation is yet to be determined, but O’Brien expressed his enthusiasm for portraying the character. However, he admitted that Smarty Pants wasn’t his initial pick. On Instagram, O’Brien shared that he desired the role of Woody, but it was already given to Tom Hanks. In response, O’Brien jokingly commented, “You’ve worked with him before and succeeded. Don’t you think you’re getting a bit repetitive?” To which they replied, “It’s Tom Hanks. It’s his role.

Conversing with them, I suggested, ‘Why not Buzz Lightyear?’ and then added a guess, ‘Is that Tim Allen we’re talking about?’ And indeed it was. However, they heard my remark as an invitation to think beyond the ordinary. But, lo and behold, they introduced me to this new character named Smarty Pants. As O’Brien expressed, ‘This character is simply the best. I prefer him over Woody or Buzz. Even if they plead with me, I won’t play anyone else but Smarty Pants. I adore him!’

Toy Story 5 will land in theaters on June 18th, 2026.
