Today at San Diego Comic-Con, the movie version of Stephen King’s novel “The Long Walk” was the center of attention in Hall H. The event featured a panel that included screenwriter JT Mollner (of “Strange Darling”), actors David Jonsson, Mark Hamill, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, and producer Roy Lee. During this gathering, there was an interactive session with the cast and crew, as well as a debut of a new trailer to offer fans a glimpse into the adaptation inspired by King’s dystopian horror thriller. Directed by Francis Lawrence (known for “Constantine” and the “Hunger Games” series), this intense and grim story will put audiences to the test with its challenging question: “How much would you endure?
The Long Walk” was Stephen King’s debut novel, penned by him at the age of 19 in 1967. Initially, this book was released under his temporary pen name, Richard Bachman, in 1979.
Mollner and Lawrence have disclosed that the horror maestro appeared quite delighted following a viewing of The Long Walk, bestowing his most valued endorsement. This novel, often labeled as unadaptable due to its grim themes and introspective nature, has been part of King’s repertoire for some time now. The filmmakers revealed earlier this month that they drew from past failed attempts at adapting the book and focused on maintaining the story’s freshness while paying tribute to the source material.
Mollner expressed to Empire Magazine, “We have a deep affection for this book, and for Stephen King’s work as well. We were determined to preserve the themes of despair and recurring violence found in the novel, but we also aimed to introduce elements that would catch the audience off guard, ensuring it wouldn’t be a simple adaptation.
On numerous occasions, various filmmakers have attempted to bring “The Long Walk” to life on the big screen, with George A. Romero, Frank Darabont, and André Øvredal among them, but so far, these attempts have been unsuccessful. Stephen King recently shared with Vanity Fair in May that the ruthless nature of his book might be the reason behind these past failures.
In the movie “The Long Walk,” we follow Ray Garraty (Cooper Hoffman) and Peter McVries (David Jonsson), along with many others in a vast ensemble cast, as they take part in an annual, lethal walking competition set in a dystopian United States. This contest, supervised by The Major (Mark Hamill), tests the endurance of its participants until only one is left standing. The endless march towards nowhere becomes a brutal test of will and stamina, with competitors being eliminated if they can’t keep up a pace faster than three miles per hour, attempt to flee, or succumb to physical exhaustion. If their speed falters, they are given warnings to pick up the pace; failure to do so results in immediate execution by one of The Major’s soldiers keeping watch over the walkers.
The Long Walk will be released in theaters on September 12th.
