New Tron: Ares Trailer Revisits Every Film in the Franchise

A fresh trailer for the upcoming movie “Tron: Ares” was unveiled by Disney this week, offering a sneak peek into the much-anticipated third installment. The film has had quite a lengthy journey to reach the silver screen, with some ups and downs along the way, but it’s scheduled to hit theaters later in the year – fifteen years after “Tron: Legacy.” Although Jared Leto’s film isn’t exactly a follow-up to the previous movie, it maintains ties to both “Tron” and “Tron: Legacy.” The latest trailer skillfully showcases the narrative continuity linking the new Tron film with its predecessors.

The fresh trailer for “Tron: Ares” initiates with a nod to the initial film as Flynn’s Arcade appears, a place we first met in the 1982 “Tron.” The trailer progresses by incorporating clips from the original movie, depicting a crowd amassing at the Tron video game, where Jeff Bridges’ character, Kevin Flynn, is playing. Subsequently, the scene switches to the Walt Disney Studios emblem, followed by a shift in focus to The Grid, the digital landscape debuted in “Tron.” The trailer proceeds to display Flynn being drawn into The Grid, similar to the first movie, and transitions to footage from “Tron: Legacy” (2010).

The trailer cleverly blends clips from previous movies to introduce scenes from “Tron: Ares”. Bruce Boxleitner mentions that the digital realm of ‘The Grid’ will eventually merge with our reality. Shifting its attention away from Jeff Bridges’ character, the trailer now centers on Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger, son of Edward Dillinger Jr., a character we last saw in “Tron: Legacy”. Dillinger discusses artificial intelligence and virtual realms, hinting at their development and our potential visits. He then adds an intriguing twist, suggesting that instead of us entering these digital worlds, they will soon invade ours.

Can Tron: Ares Succeed on Its Own?

It’s intriguing to note that despite Jared Leto being the main star of the film “Tron Ares“, it seems Disney is emphasizing Jeff Bridges’ involvement more in their marketing strategy. Although Leto has been the central figure for marketing “Tron: Ares” so far, the latest trailer solely spotlights Bridges and his return as Flynn. While Bridges played a significant role in the previous two movies, with the second one focusing on Flynn’s son, it remains unclear how extensively he’ll appear in “Tron: Ares“. It’s worth mentioning that “Tron: Ares” is not a direct sequel to its predecessors but rather a fresh installment in the long-running franchise that shares connections with the earlier films.

In light of Leto’s recent less-than-favorable reception, particularly his intense method acting as the Joker in Suicide Squad, it might be a good idea to shift attention away from him. However, considering he is the main character in the upcoming film, suddenly spotlighting Bridges late into the marketing phase appears odd, given that the movie is only one month away from its release. Revealing Flynn in a new trailer named “Flynn Lives” could potentially confuse fans. Instead, the film’s title and visuals should be sufficient to attract viewers, without relying on Flynn as the main marketing strategy.

Regardless of which route you take, moviegoers will have the opportunity to witness Jared Leto reprise his role alongside Jeff Bridges’ return as Flynn in the film titled Tron: Ares, slated for a theater release on October 10, 2025.
