New Wonder Man Theory Perfectly Connects Him to the MCU’s Best TV Series

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is set to play Simon Williams in the upcoming Marvel series, Wonder Man, and a new fan theory has people excited about his character’s origins within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series, created by Destin Daniel Cretton (known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Andrew Guest (Hawkeye), promises to be unlike anything else in the MCU. The story follows actor Simon Williams, played by Abdul-Mateen II, as he auditions for the lead role in a remake of the classic in-universe superhero film, Wonder Man, but he has a hidden advantage.

Early trailers have shown hints of the superpowers Simon Williams possesses. We’ve seen him create powerful energy blasts, his eyes glow purple, and effortlessly destroy objects. While his abilities haven’t been fully explained, a new theory suggests his introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe could connect to a popular Marvel TV series from the past.

Simon Williams’ Powers in Wonder Man Might Come From the Scarlet Witch

A recent fan theory suggests that Simon Williams might have been stuck inside the magical bubble created by the Scarlet Witch in the Disney+ show WandaVision. If he somehow entered this bubble, it could explain how he gained his superpowers. This would be a smart way to connect Simon Williams to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s possible considering another powerful hero already got their abilities from being exposed to the Scarlet Witch’s magic.

In WandaVision, Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), a SWORD agent, developed superpowers after being exposed to the energy from Wanda Maximoff’s reality-altering Hex. This gave her the ability to control light, making her incredibly powerful – powerful enough to even fix a tear in reality, as seen in The Marvels. If Simon Williams also gained his powers from the Hex, he could be just as strong, potentially making his introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe a major event.

The upcoming Wonder Man series could introduce Simon Williams as a major new force in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, potentially leading to a role with teams like the Avengers, the West Coast Avengers, or the Defenders. His powers might resemble those of Monica Rambeau, letting him control light energy, or they could be closer to his comic book abilities. The story could cleverly connect to WandaVision and the Scarlet Witch, both honoring past MCU events and streamlining Wonder Man’s often-complex comic book origins.

Wonder Man Theory Really Simplifies Simon Williams’ Marvel Backstory for the MCU

Wonder Man first appeared in Marvel Comics’ The Avengers #9 in 1964 as an enemy of the superhero team. Baron Heinrich Zemo (Helmut’s father) gave Simon Williams special ionic energy powers, turning him into Wonder Man, and tasked him with sabotaging the Avengers. This came about because of a troubled past: Williams had been in prison for attempting to steal money, a plan suggested by his brother, after their family company, Williams Innovations, began to lose business to Stark Industries.

Like many Marvel characters, Simon Williams initially holds Tony Stark responsible for his problems, avoiding personal accountability or blaming his brother, Eric (the Grim Reaper, played by Demetrius Grosse in Wonder Man). He transforms into Wonder Man, goes undercover with the Avengers, and ultimately chooses to help them instead of following through with a betrayal of Zemo, eventually becoming a full-fledged member. However, this origin story is overly complicated, and early trailers for Wonder Man suggest a different background for Williams – one where he doesn’t come from a business world or have a history of imprisonment. This means the show will need to develop a new backstory for the character.

Connecting Simon Williams’ backstory in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the Scarlet Witch makes a lot of sense. Elizabeth Olsen’s character is incredibly popular, and Marvel Studios likely wants to build on the success of WandaVision and its related shows. Wonder Man offers a great way to create new connections within the MCU, and could allow the Scarlet Witch and her Chaos Magic to empower – or even strip powers from – other heroes, potentially setting up a moment like the famous “No More Mutants” storyline in the future.
