Amazon appears to be scaling back its efforts in the gaming industry. A recent report from Bloomberg indicates that the company’s video game division will be impacted by the large layoffs affecting over 14,000 Amazon employees. While the exact number of job cuts within the gaming division hasn’t been announced, internal communications suggest there will be substantial reductions in staff.
The memo also indicates the company is focusing on areas where Amazon excels and will keep developing certain projects, such as March of Giants, along with more relaxed and AI-powered games. Development on the Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider project appears to be ongoing as well.
The popular online game New World: Aeternum will no longer receive major content updates. The developers have announced that Season 10 and the Nighthaven update will be the last significant additions to the game. While the ‘Rise of the Angry Earth’ expansion is now free for all PC players, and activities like world boss battles and bonus events will continue, seasonal and holiday events will be reduced and no new ones are planned.
Although the future of the game looks uncertain, the studio has stated that the servers will stay online until the end of 2026. They also promise to give players at least six months’ warning before shutting them down. Players on PC and consoles can continue to buy the game for now, and those with PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium subscriptions will still have access to New World: Aeternum. The development team will continue to support the game with bug fixes, updates, and server adjustments, even though they aren’t creating any new content.
In celebration of its four-year anniversary on PC, Amazon Game Studios shared a message acknowledging the incredible support of the New World player community. They emphasized that player feedback has been vital in shaping the game world of Aeternum. However, after four years of updates and a recent console launch, the team has determined they can no longer continue to develop new content for the game.
It’s unclear if recent cuts will impact Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings MMO game. However, the company still plans to continue developing and releasing smaller games for its Luna streaming service.
