New Xbox controllers bring “Breaker” special edition designs — and all three are launching later in September

If you’re in the market for additional Xbox controllers and fancy some new designs, you’re in for a treat! The Xbox team revealed their latest “Breaker” series on Wednesday via Xbox Wire, introducing three new controllers: Ice Breaker, Storm Breaker, and Heart Breaker.

The Ice Breaker takes inspiration from snow and frozen seawater, with a partially transparent shell that accentuates the frosty effect. The Storm Breaker might not be Thor’s hammer, but it boasts a metallic D-pad and a sleek black-and-white color scheme.

Lastly, the Heart Breaker stands out with its vibrant blue, pink, and purple design. All these controllers maintain the same layout as the standard Xbox Series X|S controller while being compatible with both Xbox One consoles and Windows PCs.

The preorder for all three Breaker special edition controllers is now live on the Microsoft Store, priced at $80 each. They should soon be available at other retailers as well. The launch date for these new additions is set for September 9, 2025, so you won’t have to wait long if you want to add one to your collection!

More options coming to Xbox Design Lab later this year

Currently, the special edition Breaker controllers aren’t your only option for acquiring a new Xbox controller design. Instead, you can personalize your very own unique Xbox controllers using the Xbox Design Lab, which is now open again. With this service, players can select various customizations and specific details, including choosing between a standard Xbox Series X|S controller or an Elite Series 2 model. Additionally, you have the option to add a Gamertag or other short message.

The platform was temporarily offline for several months due to Microsoft switching payment processors. However, if you’ve held out this long, it might be worthwhile to wait a little longer since the Xbox Design Lab is set to introduce new options later this year. These include revamped limited edition Xbox controllers that are difficult to find elsewhere, such as the DOOM: The Dark Ages and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt 10th Anniversary controllers launched earlier in 2021. If you’ve been considering either design and feel like you missed out, just be patient a bit longer.

The Witcher 3 Limited Edition controllers sold out lightning fast and became hard to find online within just a few days of being announced. It seems this quick sellout strategy may be applied to all future Xbox Limited Edition controllers, which eases the pressure for buyers by allowing them to secure items they might have otherwise missed.

Personally, I’ve already purchased the regular versions of the DOOM and Witcher controllers this year, so acquiring another one doesn’t seem justifiable to me. Having multiple controllers is useful in case of party games or charging issues, but there’s a limit.

If I were to make an exception and buy a new controller, it would probably be the Ice Breaker due to its appealing translucent effects that resemble some of Gears 5’s art direction from The Coalition in 2019.

I’d love to hear your thoughts if you plan on purchasing one of these new Breaker controllers or are designing a new Xbox Design Lab controller!
