New Xbox Game Has Been in Early Access on Steam for 11 Years

Early access programs let developers sell games while they’re still being made, letting players give feedback and shape the final product. While it usually takes a year or two for a game to either launch or get cancelled in early access, some projects need more time to develop. That’s been true for Amazing Frog, which has been available on Steam in early access for 11 years. However, it recently joined the Xbox Game Preview program and is now close to being fully released.

Amazing Frog first launched on Steam in November 2014. The developers at Fayju have continued to update it, and even released an early access version called Amazing Frog 2 in 2022. It’s been an unusual development process for a very unique game, but fans are hopeful the continued work will eventually pay off.

What is Amazing Frog?

As we’ve said, Amazing Frog is a pretty unusual game. The developers, Fayju, describe it as an open-world physics sandbox, and even jokingly call it “Grand Frog Auto.” Don’t expect it to be as polished as Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto series, but that name gives you a good sense of what the game is all about.

The game has a surprising amount of content, even though it’s still in development, and it’s very similar in style to games like Goat Simulator – meaning it’s intentionally ridiculous. You control a frog that bounces and… well, farts… its way around a digital version of Swindon, England. There’s a lot to do and explore, and even from the screenshots, you can see the frogs get up to some crazy things, like visiting a giant toilet, going to the moon, and battling sharks!

Amazing Frog is a silly, over-the-top game inspired by Grand Theft Auto, and players enjoying the early access version seem to be having fun. It’s especially good for playing with friends – up to four players can play together on one screen. While we wait for Grand Theft Auto 6, this game offers a chance to enjoy some chaotic, frog-themed fun.

I’m really excited about Amazing Frog! It’s out now in early access on both Steam and Xbox, and the developers, Fayju, are aiming to fully release version 1.0 later this year or early 2026. But even beyond that, they’ve said they plan to keep updating the game indefinitely, which is awesome! Of course, plans can change, but it sounds like we’ll be getting new content for a long time to come.

Amazing Frog is a silly, over-the-top game clearly inspired by Grand Theft Auto. We haven’t seen many games like that lately, so it’s good to have a new one. People playing the early version seem to be enjoying how the game is developing, making it a fun option if you’re looking for something to play while waiting for Grand Theft Auto 6.
