The latest addition to Xbox Game Pass is a remake of a classic RPG from 1995 that originally appeared exclusively on the SNES console in Japan. While the original game was never released outside of Japan, it did receive a re-release on the Nintendo Switch in 2017, again limited to Japan. A 3D remake followed in 2020 for the Nintendo Switch, PC, and PS4, marking the first time the game became available in the west. Now, this remake has made its way to the Xbox Series S and X, and it’s also accessible through the console version of Xbox Game Pass.
The video game under discussion is Trials of Mana, originally published by Square before they combined with Enix to form Square Enix. For those not acquainted with the title, it serves as a sequel to 1993’s Secret of Mana and represents the third installment in the Mana series. What sets this game apart is that the narrative evolves based on your selection of the main character and their accompanying allies.
In ancient times, when the world was plunged into darkness, the Goddess of Mana took action by wielding the Sword of Mana to vanquish eight destructive monsters called Benevodons. She imprisoned these horrors within the eight Mana Stones, restoring balance to the realm. Exhausted from her efforts to rebuild, she transformed into a tree and fell into a long sleep. Yet, evil forces sought to free the Benevodons in order to conquer the world. They ignited a devastating war to disrupt the kingdoms, bringing an end to peace. As Mana dwindled and the Mana Tree withered, the world was once again on the brink of chaos.
The duration that Trials of Mana will remain on Xbox Game Pass isn’t specified, since both Microsoft and Square Enix have yet to reveal such details. However, while it’s still available, subscribers can take advantage of a special 20% discount when they decide to purchase the game.
As an enthusiastic gamer, I can’t wait to jump into the Square Enix RPG through Xbox Game Pass! If you’re just diving in for the main storyline, expect to invest around 20 to 30 hours of gameplay.
