New Zoids Series Features Crossover With Classic Mecha Franchise

Tomy Corporation unveiled a fresh manga series centered around their famous toy brand, Zoids. However, unlike regular mangas, this one is an exciting collaboration with the fan-favorite mecha series, Patlabor. This unique crossover has been titled “Zoids x Patlabor -Code Name B.U.D.D.Y.-“. The collaboration is penned by Kazunori Ito and illustrated by Naoto Tsushima, with character designs by Akemi Takada and mechanical designs by Hidetaka Tenjin. This crossover can be found on the Heroes Comics website by IMAGIC Infos. The first chapter was made accessible to readers on August 29th, only in its original Japanese language on the Heroes Comics site. As of now, an official English translation of the chapter has not yet been released.

In the storyline of “Code Name B.U.D.D.Y.”, an enigmatic transfer occurs, placing the Zoid Hunter Wolf within the realm of Patlabor. This unusual event sees the Hunter Wolf teaming up with a novel version of the Labor robot endorsed by the police, the Ingram Mark III Labor, to safeguard Tokyo. Instead of featuring the Liger mecha, which is more commonly known, the manga creatively focuses on the Hunter Wolf machine. Notably, Patlabor marks another collaboration in the series’ celebrations for its 40th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the “Zoids: Chaotic Century” anime.

1980s saw the emergence of two iconic mecha series: Zoids and Patlabor. While Zoids features mechanical kits resembling animals, Patlabor started as a manga series that gained popularity as an anime franchise. Originally written by Masami Yuki between 1988 and 1994, the Mobile Police Patlabor manga follows a story set in the near future where Tokyo is inhabited by giant robots used as construction vehicles. These machines are known as Labors, with the police force operating their own fleet called Patrol Labors (often referred to as Patlabors). The original series centers around Noa Izumi, a young office worker who shares a unique bond with her Patlabor and treats it like a pet. Patlabor gained fame in the 90s due to two critically acclaimed animated movies by Mamoru Oshii, director of Ghost in the Shell.

In its different anime adaptations, Zoids shows a slight inconsistency in its continuity. Originally, the Zoids: Chaotic Century animation series offered a hard science fiction backdrop set far across the Milky Way, where Zoids are advanced mechanical beings that humans can control. Despite the difficulty of finding legal streams for this classic series nowadays, Takara Tomy, the company responsible for Zoids toys, has been dropping hints about the potential revival of the original anime to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

In addition to Patlabor, Zoids has teamed up with Monster Hunter, Transformers, and Evangelion. The latest Zoids video game, Zoids Wild: Blast Unleashed, has mysteriously been removed from the Nintendo Switch in North America. With Chaotic Century scarcely available on streaming platforms, concerns about the West’s neglect of the Zoids franchise have arisen among fans. Luckily, there’s Zoids x Patlabor -Code Name B.U.D.D.Y- to anticipate.
