News of a Game of Thrones film…..

Game of Thrones was a massive hit for streaming services, earning both critical acclaim and huge profits. Talk of a movie adaptation began as early as 2013, and now it’s finally happening! Or should we say, happenings? It sounds like there might be more than one film in the works.

The background to the Games of Thrones film

Warner Bros. is officially making a Game of Thrones movie based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world. Beau Willimon, known for his work on Andor and House of Cards, is writing the screenplay. Reports suggest HBO and Warner Bros. had been considering separate films about the early reign of King Aegon I Targaryen and his conquest of Westeros, with plans for a large-scale epic similar to Dune, potentially spanning multiple movies.

Where the film stands at present…

Warner Bros.’ plans are currently affected by its upcoming acquisition by Paramount, which is expected to be completed soon. However, with Paramount’s CEO David Ellison publicly expressing his strong support for the series, it’s likely the film will be a high priority for the studio. This also applies to the prequel and sequel projects HBO is developing, some of which are already close to starting production. Rumors suggest a potential sequel could focus on Arya Stark, Jon Snow, or even both characters.

The original intention…

So, apparently, David Benioff and Dan Weiss – the guys running ‘Game of Thrones’ – originally envisioned the ending as three big movies, kinda like how they did with ‘Lord of the Rings’. But HBO wasn’t having it. They were more focused on keeping their subscriber numbers up, and a huge movie commitment didn’t fit that plan, so they stuck with the TV show format.
