Next Conjuring Movie Gets Huge Update After Last Rite’s Success

Following the huge success of The Conjuring: Last Rites, which grossed almost $500 million worldwide, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are quickly moving forward with more films in the series. They’re currently developing a new prequel and are in discussions with a highly acclaimed director to helm the project.

The Conjuring prequel in works with director Rodrigue Huart

Okay, horror fans, get ready! Word is, New Line is officially moving forward with a prequel to The Conjuring. This comes on the heels of Last Rites absolutely crushing it at the box office – we’re talking over $487 million worldwide! And get this – Rodrigue Huart, the director behind that short film that got everyone talking, is in talks to direct his first big studio feature. Sounds like a promising start for another spooky chapter in the Conjuring universe, and I’m definitely intrigued to see what he brings to the table.

Filmmaker Huart quickly gained recognition in the horror genre with his highly praised short film, Transylvanie, which won an award at the SXSW festival in 2024. He continued to impress with Trigger and Real, both shown at Fantasia 2024, where he combined found-footage techniques with innovative digital storytelling. Recently, Paramount Pictures acquired the script for his new project, Suffer Little Children – a fresh take on the 1976 Spanish film Who Can Kill a Child? – with producer Walter Hamada on board.

Hamada’s working relationship with Peter Huart might have helped him get the job on the upcoming Conjuring prequel. He’s been a key executive producer for the franchise since it began, and played a big role in the success of films like The Conjuring, Annabelle, and The Nun.

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson concluded their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren with The Conjuring: Last Rites. Directed by Michael Chaves, the film dramatized the Smurl haunting and provided a satisfying conclusion to the Warrens’ story, both in terms of plot and box office success. Now that this chapter is closed, the Conjuring universe will explore its history and expand with new prequels and spin-off stories.

With Huart directing, this would be the first movie in The Conjuring Universe since 2019’s Annabelle Comes Home that wasn’t directed by Chaves, potentially bringing a new creative direction to the franchise.
