Next Final Fantasy Remake Has Reportedly Been Cancelled

The long-awaited remake of a classic Final Fantasy game has reportedly been paused, meaning Square Enix has temporarily stopped working on it. While the project isn’t necessarily cancelled forever, there are no current plans to continue development. Given that this Final Fantasy title, originally released in 2000, has never been remade – and isn’t as widely popular as other games in the series – it’s perhaps understandable that the remake has been put on hold, as a full remake would be a major undertaking and require significant resources.

According to Nate the Hate, a trusted source in the gaming industry, Square Enix has stopped working on the remake of Final Fantasy IX. We first learned about this remake in 2024, and it was initially described as smaller in scope than the Final Fantasy 7 remake. However, even a ‘modest’ remake is a significant undertaking, as rebuilding older games is both expensive and challenging.

Disappointing News For Square Enix Fans

This news is understandably upsetting for fans of Square Enix. However, the cancelled project isn’t a brand new game or a sequel that would become outdated quickly. Square Enix could easily revisit this project in the future, and it’s likely they will. While a remake of Final Fantasy 9 will probably happen eventually, it won’t be coming out anytime soon.

If you’re new to this game, it originally came out in 2000 for the PlayStation 1. It’s the ninth main game in the series and was highly praised when it launched, earning a score of 93 on GameRankings. Many consider it one of the best RPGs ever made by Square Enix. It’s sold an impressive nine million copies, which is a huge success for a game of its time.

The game first became available again in 2011 as a PlayStation classic on the PlayStation Store. Then, in 2016, an improved version was released on multiple platforms. However, it has never been fully remastered or recreated.

Keep in mind that this information hasn’t been officially confirmed by Square Enix, who haven’t made any comments yet. We don’t expect that to change soon, but we’ll let you know if anything does. In the meantime, share your thoughts in the comments or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum.
