Hard to believe, but it’s now three years since God of War Ragnarök hit the shelves, and whispers are starting to swirl regarding the upcoming installment in the God of War series.
Given the tremendous achievement of the series following its revival in 2018, it’s not unexpected that there’s significant expectation for Sony Santa Monica to deliver another hit with the third installment.
So, what do we actually know about the next God of War?
We’ll go through all the rumours to explain what you need to know.
New God of War game: Release date speculation and rumours explained
Based on the limited information available so far, it seems reasonable to anticipate that the upcoming God of War game might be launched in the year 2026. We’d like to emphasize that our current knowledge is quite scant.
At first, whispers circulated that Sony Santa Monica might launch the game in 2025, but as per industry insider Jeff Grubb on his Game Mess YouTube channel, it seems like the release date has been moved to 2026 instead.
Given that it’s now mid-year 2025 and there’s still no official word about the game, it seems plausible that a 2026 release could be the case instead.
As for the contents of the game itself, the rumour mill is even more confusing.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exclusive scoop! The rumor mill points towards the return of our favorite series to the breathtaking landscapes of ancient Greece – a nod to its roots in the original game. And guess who confirmed it? None other than Jeff Grubb!
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got some exciting news to share! In a recent update, they clarified that this isn’t just an upgraded version of the classic series we all know and love. Instead, it’s a fresh, new side-adventure we’re about to embark on together!
According to Tom Henderson’s report on the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast in February 2025, it has been confirmed that the series is going back to Greece and features a younger version of Kratos.
It has been speculated on various social platforms that the game might not include Kratos as its main character, instead opting for his brother Deimos to take center stage.
It’s been hinted that the upcoming game might not follow the full 3D format typical of the series, but could instead be a 2.5D spin-off featuring elements similar to Metroidvanias.
While there’s no solid evidence from reliable sources supporting the claims about Deimos and 2.5D, at this point, it seems reasonable to consider disregarding these rumors.
