Despite the Next Virtua Fighter Project still lacking an official name, producer Riichiro Yamada has shared insights on how Ryu Ga Gotoko Studio intends to maintain series creator Yu Suzuki’s vision of a user-friendly fighting game. In an interview with IGN, Yamada addressed questions about potential changes in the franchise’s conventional three-button control scheme.
As a dedicated Virtua Fighter fan, I’ve always appreciated the three-button system – punch, kick, and block. But when it comes to the Next Virtua Fighter Project, there’s a lingering question: will the series innovate by moving away from this classic setup, or will it stay true to its roots? The truth is, the choice behind the control scheme revolves around maintaining Suzuki’s original vision for a fighting game that’s accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Initially, when Yu Suzuki developed Virtua Fighter, he conducted extensive testing. Interestingly, he even tried using numerous buttons, many more than just three. However, they eventually decided on three buttons as the optimal choice. Given that it was primarily designed for arcades at the time, this decision seemed to be the most suitable option then.

But here we are now, and with the latest installment, RGG Studio seems to have shifted their attention from arcade enthusiasts roaming the streets in search of machines, to us, home gamers.
He clarified that while the game initially started as one for Game Center, it’s now evolving into a family-friendly game suitable for home use. So instead of just thinking about playing it at a game center, consider envisioning yourself playing it in your living room or house. Although the core concept remains the same, the focus isn’t on limiting it to three buttons. Instead, the goal is to develop a game that can be enjoyed by everyone within a household with the new style.
As an ardent fan, I can’t help but feel excited about the potential changes in the Next Virtua Fighter Project. While it’s not definitive yet, Takushi Tezuka’s hints suggest that they might be reworking the control scheme to ensure a smoother experience for new players.
