Next Virtua Fighter Project Will Feature Two Gameplay Styles, Mechanics Detailed at TGS 2025

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio recently shared a new video offering details about their next fighting game, *Next Virtua Fighter Project*. Shown at Tokyo Game Show 2025, the video highlights the game’s mechanics, including different ways to play and how matches will work. You can watch the video below.

The upcoming *Next Virtua Fighter Project* will feature two different ways to play, each offering a unique experience. The first, called Standard, follows traditional fighting game rules: players win by depleting their opponent’s health or knocking them out of the ring. Standard matches will be decided by the first player to win three rounds.

Uprising uses the same basic gameplay as the original, but adds new features designed to let players turn the tide of battle. While specific details are still limited, it appears Uprising offers a more relaxed and casual experience of *Next Virtua Fighter Project*.

The upcoming Next Virtua Fighter Project will introduce several new fighting mechanics. These include Break & Rush, Stunner and Stun Combo, and Flow Guard. Break & Rush encourages players to target specific parts of their opponent’s body. Successfully damaging a body part enough will allow a ‘break attack,’ leaving the opponent vulnerable – even between rounds.

The Stunner system introduces a fresh way to chain attacks together, building on the existing moves and animations from Next Virtua Fighter to make combos feel smoother. Alongside this, a new defensive mechanic called Flow Guard will work with the Break & Rush system, offering players a more natural and responsive way to block.

The new *Virtua Fighter* game doesn’t have a final name yet, but producer Riichiro Yamada has said the team is making it accessible to all players. This focus comes from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios wanting to stay true to the original vision of series creator Yu Suzuki, which dates back to the 1990s.

So, I was hearing from Yamada that when Yu Suzuki first made *Virtua Fighter*, he experimented with a ton of different button layouts. Like, way more than just three buttons! They tried a lot of options, but they ended up deciding three buttons worked best. He said it made sense for the arcade scene back then – it was all about keeping things accessible and fun in the game centers.

The main idea was to make a simple, accessible game that everyone could have fun playing. Because of that original vision, I’m committed to creating a game that’s easy for anyone to pick up and enjoy.

The next installment in the *Virtua Fighter* series is in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. A release date hasn’t been announced yet, but you can watch last month’s gameplay trailer to get a preview of what to expect.
