Back in October, Jez Corden from Windows Central shared that Microsoft is planning for the next Xbox to run a full version of Windows – specifically, a full-screen mode – while still keeping the familiar console setup process. These plans haven’t changed, and we might learn more about them in the coming months, possibly at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March 2026.
James Corden recently shared that the Xbox PC app is getting significant updates to work seamlessly with Windows 11’s full-screen mode. You’ll still be able to play your existing Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S games, and continue to access games from platforms like Steam and Battle.net.
Lately, Microsoft has been focusing its marketing – especially with the “This is an Xbox” campaign – on bringing everything together into one system. However, the next Xbox might be quite expensive. This is due to promises from Xbox president Sarah Bond about a high-end device, as well as increasing costs for RAM. Some rumors even suggest that both the next Xbox and the PlayStation 6 could be delayed beyond their expected 2027 or 2028 release dates.
Plus, the cost of the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 could go up even more. If Microsoft moves ahead with its plans, it will likely have plenty of time to get game developers on board with its focus on PC gaming.
