Roger Goodell is among those left reeling after the events of July 28.
After a tragic shooting incident at a Midtown Manhattan building that also serves as the NFL’s headquarters and other businesses like Blackstone, the NFL commissioner issued a statement. Regrettably, it has been confirmed that four people lost their lives in this incident, including Officer Didarul Islam of the New York Police Department.
According to a statement given to NBC News, which was also shared with employees, Goodell stated that one of our team members suffered severe injuries during the attack. At present, he’s in the hospital and his condition is stable. Members of NFL staff are currently at the hospital, offering their support to his family.
The commissioner confirmed that it was believed all other employees were safe and accounted for.
Goodell expressed heartfelt appreciation towards the swift and firm action taken by law enforcement officials in response to the threat, and specifically commended Officer Islam, who sacrificed his life for the safety of others.
A man named Islam, who hails from Bangladesh and had been serving with the New York Police Department (NYPD) for more than three years, according to NBC News. It was further confirmed by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch that Islam was a father of two kids, and at the time of his unfortunate demise, he and his spouse were expecting their third child.
Tisch stated, “He exposed himself to danger.” He “made the greatest possible sacrifice,” getting shot while in uniform, symbolizing his pledge to the city.

According to NBC News, the shooter has been positively identified as Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old resident of Las Vegas, by four high-ranking police officials. Tragically, he took his own life with a firearm.
It’s still undetermined what Tamura’s reasons were, but two sources close to the incident, as reported by NBC News, mentioned that a note discovered at the scene suggested the suspect was questioning if a condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease commonly linked with football players, could have impacted his mental state.
Apart from Officer Islam, it’s also unfortunate that Wesley LePatner, an executive at Blackstone, and three unidentified civilians lost their lives in the attack. The authorities have yet to disclose the names of the other two victims.

In 2014, LePatner began working for Blackstone and served as the Global Leader of the Core+ Real Estate sector and CEO of one of Blackstone’s largest funds, the Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust.
The company conveyed to NBC News that they can’t put into words the sorrow they are experiencing. Wesley, who was cherished by all at Blackstone, will be greatly missed. She was exceptionally intelligent, fiery in her passions, radiated warmth, displayed great generosity, and commanded deep respect within our firm as well as beyond it. In every way, she truly represented the finest qualities of Blackstone.
