Be warned: this article contains spoilers from the Battle rounds of Season 28 of The Voice, which aired on October 20th. If you haven’t watched yet, you can stream the episodes on Peacock.
As Season 28 of The Voice moves closer to the Knockout rounds, coaches Niall Horan, Snoop Dogg, Reba McEntire, and Michael Bublé are starting to narrow down their teams after enjoying the team-building process. The Battle rounds are especially difficult, and Niall Horan admitted they are the part of the show he likes the least because he has to eliminate contestants.
Niall Horan faced a tough choice on Night 3 of the Battles when Aiden Ross and Ava Nat competed against each other. Similar to last week, when a promising contestant was eliminated due to the new rule allowing artists to choose their battle partners, Horan worried about losing either singer. Both Aiden and Ava had strong individual voices, but they sounded even better when singing together – so much so that Reba McEntire suggested they form a duo! Want to hear for yourself? Here’s a listen:
Niall Horan found it incredibly tough to pick a winner and explained to Carson Daly why the Battle rounds are so challenging.
Carson, I have to be honest, I really don’t enjoy this part of the show. It’s definitely the hardest for me, because it’s tough saying goodbye to people I’ve only just gotten to know.
You know, hearing that actually clicked for me. I’ve seen people like Adam Levine criticize the Knockout rounds, but by then, the singers have already had a few coaching sessions. It’s like a really intense music boot camp, and they’ve definitely learned a lot by that point, even if the round itself isn’t perfect.
During the competitions, they’ve only had a single opportunity to collaborate before the coaches reduce the team sizes.
Okay, so things got a little tense, but thankfully I still had my ‘Save’ available! Even though I ended up picking Aiden Ross to win, I was still able to keep Ava Nat on my team, which was a huge relief. It’s always good to have that safety net!
Snoop Dogg had a tough time when Emmanuel Rey and Mindy Miller competed. He put off making a decision for as long as possible, eventually criticizing his fellow coaches and attempting to get Carson Daly to handle the situation for him. He then stated:
Ugh, this part of the show always kills me! It’s so awkward when everyone just stares at me. Seriously, my heart starts pounding, I feel my blood pressure rise, and my eyes even start to water. It’s just too much!
Carson Daly suggested Snoop Dogg’s odd behavior might’ve just been from hanging out in the greenroom, but it was pretty obvious Snoop really cared about the people he was considering. He clearly didn’t want to let anyone go who felt like family. Ultimately, though, he picked Mindy Miller. I’m still wondering if that was the right decision, honestly!
It always felt a bit harsh to pit teammates against each other with only one surviving, particularly so early in the competition, but that’s just how the game works.
The next episode of The Voice will air on NBC next Monday, October 27th, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. This season has already given us memorable moments like the Carson Callback and the Battles pairing twist, and it looks like the show has another surprise in store for the Knockouts round. Be sure to watch and find out what it is!
