Nick Reiner is enlisting the help of a notable lawyer.
Following his arrest on December 14th in connection with the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, whose bodies were discovered at their home, 32-year-old Nick hired attorney Alan Jackson to represent him in the case.
On December 16th, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office stated they will be charging Nick with two counts of first-degree murder, and will also pursue a multiple murders enhancement.
David Jackson, who told TopMob News he’s joining Reiner’s legal team, has a history of working on well-known criminal cases. Most recently, he played a key role in securing an acquittal for Karen Read in June. Read had been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the 2022 death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe.
In January 2022, Read was accused of striking Officer O’Keefe, a 16-year Boston Police Department veteran, with her car at a house party. She then allegedly left him injured during a snowstorm.
Despite the fact that her trial in 2024 didn’t result in a clear decision, she was ultimately found not guilty of murder in June. After the verdict – which also included a conviction for driving under the influence – Jackson spoke about his reaction.
He told WHDH outside the Dedham courthouse that he felt fantastic, like a huge weight had been lifted. He expressed his relief that he believed an innocent woman had been cleared of all charges and proven right.
He described it as the highlight of his career, and a truly special moment for both him and Karen. It was a life-affirming experience for both of them.
Oh my god, you won’t BELIEVE who Mark Jackson has worked with! He actually defended Harvey Weinstein, like, in court in LA! Can you even imagine? That trial was HUGE, and Jackson was right there. Weinstein was found guilty of rape in 2022 and got, like, sixteen years! It’s just… incredible to think about who this guy has represented.

This lawyer previously defended Kevin Spacey in the Massachusetts groping case. The case ended when the person who accused Spacey withdrew their complaint in 2019.
After nearly 20 years as a key prosecutor with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, followed by a move to private practice in 2013, the 60-year-old quickly realized his true calling was to be in the courtroom.
Exhibit A: his love for cross-examination.
He explained to Vanity Fair that he wants the jury to pay close attention to his demeanor – his facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice – and then observe how the witness responds. He believes this dynamic is what makes a good cross-examination so engaging, but it also requires extensive preparation.
He explained that every question he asks is carefully planned, as he’s working towards a larger goal. He compared it to conducting a symphony, saying it’s a rewarding process to carry out.
As we follow developments regarding Jackson’s involvement in the Reiner case, here’s a detailed timeline of what happened.

Long before Rob and Michele Singer Reiner sadly passed away, their son, Nick Reiner, spoke openly about his own struggles with addiction. He even worked with his father on the 2015 film Being Charlie, which explored the topic of substance abuse.
Nick explained that he had been to rehab 17 times before turning 30.
In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he recounted his experiences with homelessness, stating he had lived on the streets in Maine, New Jersey, and Texas. He described spending nights and weeks without shelter, and admitted it was a difficult time.
Two years later, Nick recalled an instance when he “wrecked” his home while high on drugs.
He described an incident from 2018 on the Dopey podcast, explaining that he spent 10 rounds sparring in his guest house. He’d taken a lot of stimulants – he believes it was cocaine and another drug – and was awake for days. This led to him starting to punch things in the guest house.

According to multiple sources at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on December 13th, director Rob Reiner and his 32-year-old son, Nick, had a significant argument. Friends of the family later confirmed the fight to the L.A. Times, adding that guests observed Nick behaving oddly during the holiday celebration.

On December 14th, around 3:40 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department was called to a home in Brentwood, California, to investigate a death, following a report received the day after a Christmas party.
According to a police statement, officers found two people inside the home, later identified as Robert and Michele Reiner.
The Robbery-Homicide Division’s Homicide Special Section began investigating how the deaths occurred.
According to NBC News, Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton stated that investigators will be speaking with many family members. Rob Reiner and his wife have three children: Nick, Romy, and Jake. Rob also adopted the daughter of his late ex-wife, Penny Marshall, named Tracy Reiner.

Rob and Michele Reiner didn’t die from illness or old age; a source told NBC News they likely died from stab wounds.
According to the LAPD, the initial investigation revealed that the Reiners were victims of homicide.

Police determined that Rob and Michele’s son, Nick, caused their deaths. He wasn’t arrested until several hours after his parents were discovered.
Police announced that Nick Reiner was arrested around 9:15 p.m. on December 15th. He has been charged with murder and is currently being held in jail without the possibility of bail.
TopMob News was not able to find a lawyer on file to speak on Nick Reiner’s behalf.

After Rob’s death, Tracy said she’d seen her father the day before his passing.
She told NBC News she was from a wonderful family and was completely shocked by what happened, saying she didn’t know what to say.

Jane Fonda saw Rob and Michele the night before their tragic deaths.
The actress shared on Instagram on December 15th that she had seen them two nights prior, and they seemed happy and well. She expressed being devastated and shocked by the news.

Michelle Obama shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on December 15th that she and Barack Obama had planned to meet with Rob and Michele on the day they tragically passed away.
