Nicolas Cage, Christian Bale Are Unrecognizable in First Madden Teaser

We’ve all seen how dedicated Christian Bale is to changing his appearance for his roles, and it’s often pretty extreme.

The English actor confessed that repeatedly losing and gaining weight has visibly aged him, even if it’s just a cosmetic effect.

For the new movie Madden, Christian Bale underwent extensive makeup sessions with Nicole Cage. Bale portrays the passionate Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, while Cage embodies the iconic coach and broadcaster, John Madden.

The first preview released on Christmas revealed how much the actors changed for their roles. Christian Bale has a receding hairline to portray Davis, and Nicolas Cage gained weight to play the heavier Madden, who was known for his competitive spirit, love of football, and enjoyment of food and drink.

And rest assured, if the teaser is any indication, Cage has dug into the role with gusto.

The movie is scheduled for release next Thanksgiving, a nod to the holiday beloved by the man it’s about, and reunites Christian Bale with director David O. Russell, who previously directed Bale in the Oscar-winning film The Fighter and American Hustle.

In 2023, Amazon MGM Studios announced a film about John Madden, covering his successful coaching relationship with Al Davis and the Raiders, the creation of the Madden NFL video game, and his rise as a legendary figure in football.

John Madden, who led the Raiders to a championship in 1977 and then became a beloved broadcaster, died in 2021 at age 85. Al Davis, the team’s former owner, passed away in 2011 at 82. His son, Mark Davis, currently owns the Raiders, who are now based in Las Vegas and last won the Super Bowl in 1984. Tom Brady is a minority owner of the team.

The film Madden features Kathryn Hahn as John Madden’s wife, Virginia, and Sienna Miller as Carol Davis, the wife of Al. John Mulaney plays Trip Hawkins, the founder of Electronic Arts, who made the smart decision to work with the legendary football announcer—a partnership that ultimately launched the hugely popular Madden video game series.
