The fashion designer revealed that her daughter, Harlow Winter Kate Madden, actually goes by Kate instead of her given first name, Harlow. She shares Harlow with Joel Madden.
Nicole shared in a recent interview with People magazine that the person in question prefers to be called by her middle name, and is living a full life.
People were surprised to find out the teen’s chosen name – Nicole shared it on Instagram while celebrating her 18th birthday on January 12th – and the 44-year-old admits she understands the reaction.
Nicole explained that she hadn’t checked the online response to her post, but understood it, adding, ‘She uses her middle name.’
In a recent Instagram post, Nicole Richie shared a collection of photos spanning her daughter Kate’s life, with the caption, “18 years of you @katemaddennn.”
Nicole’s husband Joel—with whom she also shares son Sparrow Madden, 16—commented, “That’s my girl.”
Nicole didn’t say why Kate goes by her middle name, but they had previously talked about how they chose her names originally.
After her son was born in 2008, Nicole explained to People magazine that she and her partner disagreed on a name. She wanted something with a bohemian, ‘hippie’ vibe, while he preferred a traditional, biblical name.

Joel explained that he was a fan of actress Jean Harlow, while Nicole “likes Shalom Harlow the model.”
The Good Charlotte member explained they chose the name Harlow because it has a timeless quality. They added that they picked Winter as a middle name because the season evokes a sense of peace and tranquility.
Nicole mentioned she’s always liked the name Kate, but wasn’t sure if it worked well as a first name.
“I knew I’d never name my kid that,” she explained, “because it was just too plain.”

Nicole has often honored her daughters through her work, launching her jewelry brand, House of Harlow, in 2008 and her clothing line, Winter Kate, in 2010. It’s no surprise then that her daughter shares her mother’s passion for fashion.
She told TopMob News in May that her daughter is welcome to borrow anything from her wardrobe. She explained this comes from her own childhood, as her mother always allowed her to wear whatever she wanted from her closet, and she wants to offer her daughter the same freedom.
“She’s in my closet, I’m in hers,” Nicole added. “It’s all, ‘Whoever wants what.’”
