If you’ve been tuning into Netflix’s “Building the Band,” where the late Liam Payne is a prominent figure, you’ve probably experienced a spectrum of feelings. This reality competition, which honored the One Direction member, was set to air on TV schedules months following his demise. Consequently, seeing him guide the singers evokes both immense joy and sadness. Recently, one of his peers, Nicole Scherzinger, has expressed profoundly why she was so eager for fans to witness Payne in this series.
When asked about collaborating with Payne, Scherzinger reminisced about their shared history, as they were both part of the X Factor panel that formed One Direction. For them, this was a significant “full-circle” moment for multiple reasons. Emotion overcame her when discussing this new series, and Willie Geist commented on Payne’s apparent happiness within it. On Sunday Today, she expressed her thoughts as follows:
As a devoted admirer, I can hardly contain my enthusiasm for everyone to witness this extraordinary show, for it is Liam who truly illuminates it. His talent, radiant and effortless, is reminiscent of a captivating light. To those familiar with him, his heart is as warm and generous as the sun. And what’s more, he gets to share that goodness with all of us in this remarkable production.
As a fellow movie-goer, I can’t help but draw parallels between Niall Horan’s role as a coach on The Voice, which he’ll be reprising for the upcoming season slated for 2025, and Olly Murs’ experience on Building the Band. Just like how Niall leveraged his time on The X Factor and his own career to guide and motivate contestants, Olly did the same during his tenure on Building the Band.
Sherzinger emphasized that Payne’s insights are particularly valuable because he has personally experienced the contestants’ journey. She described him as someone who can offer “really insightful advice from a deeply personal perspective.” Throughout her response, she made it clear how impressive and praiseworthy Payne was during the show. Her comments about him were nothing but sincerely positive and complimentary.
Later on, Geist discussed the mysterious circumstances surrounding Payne’s demise. At just 31 years old, he met an untimely end by falling from a balcony on the third floor in Argentina. Posthumous examinations revealed pink cocaine and other substances in his system as well as his hotel room. A comprehensive investigation was launched to uncover the truth behind his passing.
In the midst of everything, AJ McLean, a fellow cast member alongside Payne and Scherzinger in this Netflix production, spoke candidly about their shared journey towards sobriety. He highlighted the challenges involved, while expressing his wish for people to recall his co-star not just for his tremendous talent, but also for his heartfelt empathy.
That’s the point Nicole Scherzinger made here, too, saying:
People are all complex beings, a testament to our humanity. It’s our unique spirits and souls that make us who we are. I can only hope for more empathy and understanding among people, because at some point in our lives, we all face struggles, and it’s often hard to tell when someone is going through them. During the show, Liam was doing well, and we shared many enjoyable moments with him.
Viewers of “Building the Band” on Netflix have been expressing their appreciation for Payne’s performance in the show. For instance, a video of him singing “What Makes You Beautiful” alongside the audience has garnered more than a million views and has brought smiles and tears to many.
As a movie critic, I must say that I was deeply touched by Liam Payne’s performance in “Building the Band.” It’s truly heartening to witness his exuberance, supportiveness, and thoughtfulness throughout the series, which has left both me and the fans emotionally stirred.
Although his demise was unfortunate, sudden, and intricate, this series presents a far happier aspect of his lasting impact – one we’ll cherish eternally.
