Kurt Wagner, better known as Nightcrawler, is a standout member of the X-Men. Born to the mutant Mystique (and later revealed to be her wife, Destiny’s, son as well), he has a striking, somewhat demonic appearance, but is actually a deeply kind and religious man – a devout Catholic, in fact. Nightcrawler is often the playful heart of the team, and he’s incredibly powerful. He boasts enhanced agility, flexibility, night vision, a gripping tail, and the ability to teleport, making him a long-time favorite among fans. Plus, he always has some fantastic outfits!
Nightcrawler, the beloved teleporting mutant, is known for his unique and fashionable appearance while battling villains. He’s sported everything from traditional costumes to practical gear and even a surprising outfit or two. Here’s a look at his seven best looks.
7) Uncanny Spider-Man
For a short period after the Krakoa era and before the ‘From the Ashes’ event, Nightcrawler temporarily became Spider-Man. He donned the Spider-Man costume and patrolled Central Park, where he fought the Vulture, who was then employed by Orchis. Working alongside Silver Sable, Nightcrawler successfully defeated the Vulture during a time of intense anti-mutant prejudice.
Wearing a Spider-Man costume with his signature blue and red colors, Nightcrawler looked impressively intimidating – a great fit for him. He moved so quickly that you didn’t even notice he wasn’t using webs, making his time as Spider-Man a success. While the opening for his tail immediately revealed his identity, it’s a really fun costume that feels like something straight out of a video game, and that’s definitely a positive. Hopefully, we’ll see it as a playable skin in Marvel Rivals.
6) From the Ashes ’24
Kurt’s costume has been updated with a more armored look for this new phase. It features extra padding and shoulder pieces, giving his classic outfit a modern refresh. While the added armor makes him appear a bit larger, it suits the direction he’s taking. A priest collar, often seen in his other outfits, would be a welcome addition. Ultimately, the costume’s strength lies in its simplicity and how it builds upon an already well-known design.
5) 2000s Costume
Kurt had a difficult time throughout the 2000s and 2010s, but he did manage to get a surprisingly good costume out of it. Seeing the hero choose a relaxed, low-key disguise was a welcome change. The costume allowed Nightcrawler to appear more ordinary, which was a refreshing look for him. He’s always been self-conscious about his appearance compared to others, and a simple hoodie and jacket helped show him that he could blend in and be seen as a regular person despite his unique look. It probably would have been even better if he’d chosen a red hoodie instead of gold.
4) Ultimate X-Men
The early days of Ultimate X-Men featured some memorable costumes, and Nightcrawler’s was no exception. While he resembles Sunspot a bit in this version, the darker look with gold highlights actually worked really well, giving his classic outfit a cool, practical edge. Adding yellow smoke during his teleportation provides a fresh, updated feel.
This outfit definitely leans into the early 2000s, with a lot of references to shows and styles from that era, and it’s actually pretty successful. He might look a bit more intimidating than in some other looks, but if you see it as a fun throwback to the past, it really works.
3) Immortal X-Men
During the recent Krakoa era for the X-Men, Nightcrawler received a significant visual update. He traded his usual look for a stylish outfit featuring a jacket-like top with a black undershirt. The most noticeable change, though, was the addition of a goatee. This small detail made him appear more approachable and relatable, a side of the character fans don’t often see. It also highlighted a more fashionable aspect of Kurt’s personality, making for a fantastic and memorable twist on his classic design, even though the look wasn’t permanent.
2) Swashbuckling Solo
Kurt’s first solo comic series gave his classic look a noticeable improvement. This was the debut of his “swashbuckler” outfit, and even though it wasn’t overly complex, it was very effective. The changes – adding swords, a bandana, and a few belts – were simple but made a big impact. It’s a fun design that still looks good today.
Kurt has revisited this costume, or parts of it, several times over the years, especially the sword. It’s just a really cool addition!
1) Classic Costume
It’s tough to improve on something already this great. His original circus costume, which later became his iconic X-Men uniform, is one of the best in the entire team’s history. The combination of red, white, black, and his blue skin was a perfect design. Using just a few colors in a simple pattern created an instantly recognizable look, and it’s a testament to its effectiveness that the costume has remained largely unchanged over the years.
Nightcrawler has sported the same iconic look for half a century, ever since his debut in Giant-Sized X-Men #1. Over those years, he’s become a cornerstone of the X-Men, and this costume is a major reason why – it’s truly memorable and effective.
