Nightwing’s 5 Best Costumes

As a die-hard comic book fan, I’ve been captivated by Dick Grayson’s stunning costumes for over eight decades now. He initially made his mark as Batman’s Robin, but for the past four decades, he’s soared as Nightwing, and his costume game has remained consistently impressive even as he ventured out on his own. The sky truly is the limit when it comes to Nightwing’s wardrobe. While some tweaks have been subtle, others have been radical, but one thing remains constant: Nightwing’s costume is timelessly classic. However, there are certain iterations that stand out as simply superior.

Regardless of your personal opinions about his appearance from behind, it’s challenging to argue that he doesn’t often exude an incredible look. With an abundance of jokes involving his backside, let me present you with some of his most impressive costumes. To clarify, this isn’t a ranking, but rather a collection of the top-notch fashion choices made by Nightwing.

1) Classic Black and Blue

There’s no contest when it comes to Dick’s iconic black-and-blue attire from the ’90s – it’s not hard to see why he’s stuck with it for so long. With its mid-length hair, domino mask, and dark tones, it truly embodies the essence of his costume. It beautifully encapsulates both his origins as Robin and his evolution since then.

Over time, he’s subtly adjusted the shade of blue in his costume and logo, giving it a contemporary feel while preserving its original essence. The design elements have remained largely consistent, with some additional artistic touches added by different artists. This iconic design has stood the test of time for a good reason.

2) Redondo Redesign

In the Tom Taylor comic series illustrated by Bruno Redondo, the costume deviates slightly from the traditional black-and-blue version but stands out significantly. The addition of more blue on the arms, inside the hands, and on the mask (changing it from black) gives this costume a unique charm that makes it stand out among others. These design choices add a striking element to the character, making it distinct yet appealing to fans.

A refreshed costume should retain the essence of the original while introducing something novel and exciting. This aesthetic has been consistent throughout Dan Watters’ tenure, demonstrating that even minor adjustments can make a significant impact, which this example beautifully illustrates.

3) Discowing

The original suit, affectionately called “Discowing” by fans, is still good despite being quite outdated. It’s unmistakably a relic of its era. The blend of blue and gold gives it a striking appearance that undeniably paved the way for Nightwing’s future styles. While some newer fans might not share the same affection, Discowing remains an impressive outfit to kick off Dick Grayson’s solo hero adventure.

4) Red Suit

Without a doubt, the Nightwing costume that sparks the most debate is his New 52 attire. Following the pattern of all the Robins during that period, Nightwing changed from blue to red. This shift symbolized family unity, which was a thoughtful idea, but it still feels unusual for some fans. Passionately, many dislike this suit unjustifiably. Fortunately, it didn’t become permanent, but it holds a significant place in the hearts of certain enthusiasts.

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that the intricate ridged gauntlets and boots on this character design are quite appealing. However, the striking red eyes are a bit too intense, in my opinion, and might be a tad overwhelming for some. Comparing it to characters like Phoenix Force Cyclops and Red Hood, this suit certainly sparks a range of emotions among fans. It’ll be fascinating to observe how it evolves as more viewers discover it throughout the years.

5) Gold Trim

The second “Discowing” costume, you’ve got that right, it has a twin, is an upgraded version of the original, yet not without its flaws. Maintaining a single shade of blue with increased gold accents was a more refined concept. However, the mask might be excessively large, which was during Nightwing’s period of self-discovery. It’s an exaggerated 90’s design, but that doesn’t make it inherently bad either. Much like its counterpart, this costume too is a reflection of its era.

This suit stands out due to its inclusion of a controversial feature – the ponytail. Many fans have found issue with this design element, but we’re inclined to question if it truly deserves such criticism. In our opinion, it doesn’t.
