Dobrev and White developed a connection following a New Year’s Eve party they attended together with friends, including her fellow Vampire Diaries cast members Kayla Ewell and Candice Accola King, at the grand opening of The Mayfair, a new supper club at the Bellagio Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

On October 30, 2024, Shaun and Nina publicly declared their upcoming marriage, or more casually, announced their engagement. Exactly a week later, they made their first appearance as an engaged couple on the red carpet, gracing the event for the 2024 Earthshot Prize Awards held in Cape Town, South Africa.
